Surprised in light of Ricciuto's retirement this topic hasnt been brought up, so who is going to get the gig????

Will Goodwin do it until he retires 2-3 yrs I guess until say a Van Berlo has had more time to develop as player but also prove himself as a leader???

Will the AFC turn to the future and perhaps look straight at Rutten or Thompson????

Discuss and Thoughts????

I rekon that Goodwin will captain for the next couple of years, until Scott Thmompson or Ben Rutten are more Experienced

Would have to agree with this

Goodwin is a proven performer even with the captaincy, and you would think he has at least 2 years left in him, if his body holds up as it is now.

Gives them time to decide on the next captain which IMO, is between Rutten, VB and Thompson

Give it directly to Truck. Carey was a captain at younger age and he ahndled it well. Truck seem to be of the similar mould, ie laid back, "normal" bloke. Also Rutten as captain will show us the AFC are looking to the future, and not chasing this elusive premiership with Edwards/Macca/Goody and co. Their chance has come and gone. Time to look at a premiership with the next crop of players coming through, in three years time.
In any case Goody will still be a leader. Does the Captain do much in Footy anway? Apart from the coin toss and a marketing "face" for the club, which is Macca for our club. You can still be a leader if you not the captain.

Goodwin is an absolute certainty to do it until he retires. This is pretty much already known.

This is further indication that the club want NVB to get the job IMO.

I think the obvious reason it hasnt been mentioned is that we all feel Goodwin will get the nod

That doesnt bother me a great deal but I am in the Rutten camp as next captain. Scott Thompson doesnt inspire me

Same way I see it. Both excellent choices.

Goody has earned it. NVB will earn it. :thumbsu:

Goody until he retires. After that you would think van Berlo would be in the box seat to take over.

Goody has to get it. If he wasn't asked or offered then it would be wrong.

The only reason he wouldn't is if he refuses but what player would do that.

Definitely Goodwin. After that it's anyones guess at this stage. :thumbsu:

I had thought Thompson in years past, but FWIW I would anoint Rutten.

FWIW.....

Goodwin will be 31 next year. he should probably concentrate on making sure his body is in the best shape it can be over the next couple of years as he is probably the most important midfielder on your list.

The AFC should get serious about the new generation and appoint someone like Rutten. The only thing against Rutten is perhaps the position he plays. It might be difficult to lead from that part of the ground at certain periods of games but Rutten looks like a natural successor to Roo.

VB hasn't established himself as an elite player of the AFC yet. Once he has done this then maybe put the added responsibility of being captain.

.

I dont have any concerns with where Rutten plays. I think captaincy is more of an external undertaking . With the leadership group spread over the ground issues will be nipped quickly.

Yup pretty much agree with that PC. My point was that it was the ONLY reason IMO that Rutten mightn't get the gig, minute a point as it is. As much as I respect Goodwin I just think you have an opportunity right now (well over the preseason) to make a statement that guys like Rutten, Reilly, Van Berlo etc are the main men of the future of the AFC.

Of course with more than able support from guys like Goodwin/Edwards/Bassett/Macca....

Goodwin is a very shortterm option.

Yep, I expect this is how it will pan out.

Goody has effectively led the team on field for the best part of the last year & done a good job, so no reason why he wouldn't get the full-time gig.

No other standout at this stage.
