Next AFC Captain???

Goodwin deserves it and will make a good captain. However there is a chance they may go straight to Rutten. In 2 years more than likely Goody, Edwards, Mcleod and Bassett will all be gone. The team will be at the crossroads and it may be a tough ask giving Rutten the captaincy in those circumstances. If they give it to him now, and he still has all that leadership and ability around him, he will be in charge of a competitive team. In 2 years who knows where we are going to be as a club with those quality players and leaders gone.

Just give it to Kenny and be done with it.
Unfortunately I think the powers that be will again conspire against Kenny and Goody will rob him of the captaincy.

Goodwin - is an outstanding leader, and has the respect of the players. You can see that being captain brings up his game up several notches evident in the last showdown. The thing that worries me is age, within 2-3 years alot of players will be gone, including Goody. I'd much prefer one captain over a 5 year period rather than two to act as a constant through the times of need.

Thompson - he is clear leadership material and can be a proven match winner on his day. His young enough to lead us for 6+ years and is an excellent example of how our youngster should play (with aggression, head over the ball .etc) The one flaw in his game is that i believe that he has difficulty in shaking off taggers, captaincy would almost ensure he was tagged each game.

Rutten - I'm one for believing a captain should inspire a team. Rutten does his job week in week out. If he were more like simliar to Scarlett with his runs out of the back line then I'd think he would be a shoe-in.

Reilly - he was touted to be a future Adelaide captain in 05 with Thompson. But I think his star has waned since then, at our prime last year he was just a bench player. He has been hampered by injuries this year and should be given next year to concentrate on his game.

V.B - he is a decent player but still has a long way to go before he will be am elite player- let alone a captain. Give him a few years

Personally, i want another captain to lead us for 5-6 years. With the impending retirements within the next 2-3 years we need a player to lead us through time. I think Thompson should be given the nod although Goody will get it anyway

Goody should do it until he retires whenever that may be however I wouldnt be disappointed if Edwards or McLeod were given the job until either of themretires.

All aged 30 they may make them joint captains until the next incumbent.

Thommo or maybe VB could become good leaders. I wouldnt annoint Rutten.

I'm in your camp here TJ.

Firstly I would never appoint a FB as captain. I want my captain to be in the thick of the fray where he can be a constant inspiration and leader and that tends to suggest mid-fielder.

Have people here heard Truck on TV - OK but barely adequate IMO. That off-field role is a very important one and something that Roo did comfortably.

Like Roo at FF? I dont get this generalisation anymore

What's wrong with Reilly being in the running for captain in the next few years suburban_lameass?

Where did i say there's anything wrong with Reilly being in the running in the next few years?

I, like many other crows supporters, believe Reilly is a quality footballer and a a future leader of this club, but you saying you think Reilly is in with a chance of being appointed as captain NEXT YEAR says alot for your intelligence (as does that "suburban lameass" call)

.....I'm talking about after Goodwin.

Rutten's desperation inspires the team at times. But yeah I reckon a captain needs to be more consisently part of the action, or from full back, more attacking like fuzzy Scarlett.

FWIW.....

Goodwin will be 31 next year. he should probably concentrate on making sure his body is in the best shape it can be over the next couple of years as he is probably the most important midfielder on your list.

The AFC should get serious about the new generation and appoint someone like Rutten. The only thing against Rutten is perhaps the position he plays. It might be difficult to lead from that part of the ground at certain periods of games but Rutten looks like a natural successor to Roo.

VB hasn't established himself as an elite player of the AFC yet. Once he has done this then maybe put the added responsibility of being captain.

I totally agree with you, if the AFC appoint Simon Goodwin IMO it will be an expression about the mindset of the club, a quick fix for short term gain. Making someone captain for the sake of it, Tony McGuinness anyone ?? Next years needs to be the beginning of a new era at the club. Honestly I would go for a leadership group of Reilly, Rutten and Thompson. If next year our leadership group is Goodwin, Burton, McLeod, Bassett then .... actually I will reserve my comment until we see what happens, but wont be impressed.

If we are serious about rebuilding it's time to elect a captain that will be part of the new generation coming through and not just a stop gap solution, just like what our player management needs to be next year.

im surprised Macca hasnt got much of a mentioned.

I would have gone co-captains, as much as i hate the concept of co-captains.

The pleasing thing for me today was the young players stepping up and showing their leadership. Nathan van Berlo in particular did his chances of being a captain one day no harm!

His desperation was first class and on a few occasions he went into the contest without fear. This kid has leadership written all over him. Give Goody the captaincy for the next 2-3 years and have van Berlo take over then.

In the mean time appoint Goodwin a captain and have Thompson, van Berlo, Rutten and Reilly as his deputies. After Goody is retired, pick a captain out of that lot and I would be comfortable in saying van Berlo would be the man for the job.

That you, Neil? ;)

My pick would be Thompson. Hands down.

As of the start of season 2008 he will be 25, have a good three seasons (with us) under his belt and will probably have an AA guernsey and B&F on the mantle to signal his transition to elite status.

He is aggressive and will have plenty of footy left in the job - at least 5 you'd think.

Goody, while a worthy captain, will be 31 at the start of 2008 and even if he still manages to kill it in his twilight years (the quickfire demise of iron men Hart and Roo at a similar age is of massive concern in today's quiksilver runfest footy), his captaincy will be very much a Tony McGuinness seat-warmer job.
