We need to find the next Clarkson (easier said than done) and make sure he is surrounded by a strong culture that demands elite standards from the CEO down to the boot studders. I reckon we're on the way to achieving the second part already.
This is the bit that I always find strange ... as Clarkson grew into what he is now, he was not some perfect lump of clay that was shaped into a super-coach. It was his experiences that taught him.

We actually need to strike out a new path to success, not try and follow an old one. Look at Clarkson's path and tell me if you think we would be aiming to follow it? Not without knowing the end result we wouldn't ... and that is the crux of it.

Clarkson (like everyone) is a one-off.

We all want a coach that the rest of the competition will be envious of in 2 years time - but it isnt that easy - ask Hinkley. He was the darling, now he is struggling. All those that jump off him now, will jump back on if he get's Port a premiership, and if he doesn't everyone will say "I told you he was a flash in the pan".

Hopefully we learned something form the last time we went through the process, not to discount people - to listen and be open to opportunities.

For what it's worth - I like Campo, I like that he will bring continuity from Walshy but some new direction of his own. If Campo wants a change of club and heads to Carlton ... then I'll back Fagan and Roo to find someone with the right attitude that will continue our trajectory to the success we all crave.

I just can't think that many (if any) situations where poaching a premiership winning coach has netted a premiership for the new side. My concern would be that Clarkson's drive wouldn't be there anymore, and we'd end up with a Blight to St Kilda sort of scenario instead.
Maybe your right. Like everyone here I just want to see the club get the best that their is. Don't really care how they do it. Roo pulled a rabbit out of his hat with Walshy. I just hope he can repeat it.

I hope Campo is auditioning for the job. If he keeps on as is, he will be the obvious choice.
I'm impressed by his match day coaching, the positive moves he's made with the side so far--Jenkins closer to goal, our improved movement away from stoppages, backing Riley, Rat and Martin, and his general demeanour and handling of a difficult time for the club.
Early days, I know, but positive signs.
When Campo was put in the chair I thought that we were in for a rough ride. Last year so many were against him including myself. They wanted him moved on from being our midfield coach. I have to say that so far he has been prepared to make changes. VB to the seconds. Subbed Wright last week which could result with Wright being dropped. Stayed the course with Knights and played Atkins. He dropped Crouch and I am not sure why. So he is not afraid to make a decision. I also have watched his interaction with the players including Danger and so far it looks like the boys are behind him. As you say its early days.

Excellent!

Personally, I'm not a Dew fan so the one thing I fear is that Worsfold apparently already has a mentoring relationship set up with Dew. I really don't want a Swans game plan and who knows if Dew can successfully instigate and manage his own plans. He's been in one system for a long time.

I still believe Pyke's football and life experience stacks up better, especially when topped off by the fact the Eagles are flying and he is roundly considered a great tactician. Eagles footy is far closer to Walsh's vision and style than Swans footy imo.

Pyke, Worsfold, Glass, Teague have a fair bit of shared heritage/relationships…that added to the fact most are here already could really help for a great transition.
I too don't want to go down that road of a Swans game plan.
I was a big fan of getting Bassett because he was in my eyes a defensive coach and good defence wins 'titles'.
Walsh comes along and brought in a game plan that although it relied on team defence it also preached be brave and attack.
We are playing some of the most attractive football I've seen us play in a long while. Our transition game can be exhilarating at times and it's the sort of game plan that will put Hawthorn on it's heels.
You give the Hawks time to set up and thread the needle, they'll cut you up.
I came away from our match against Hawthorn thinking 'sign this coach up for ten years.'
He was onto something but we were missing a few key parts. Our disposal was not up to standard and we didn't quite have the personnel to match it with them.

We are now the fourth most attacking team( Roo on the TV) but our defence still needs work.
If we keep this game style and add a few key players to our squad we could be a very accomplished outfit.
I'm really hoping we go for a coach whose been exposed to these philosophies and will embrace this style of football.
Bassett is no longer my first choice but a bloke like Pyke is an intriguing proposition if Woosha isn't available.

I'm sure that the panel will be looking at a candidate who isn't going to come in and re-brand the team style. They found in their previous coach a man whose set some foundation structures which the hierarchy agreed with. I guessing they'll go down that same path and appoint a coach who is willing to coach with a similar mindset. The interview process would be great to see this time.

Cheeky comment.

Inside info or simply happy your initial guess is becoming more popular?!
Sorry, yes cheeky.

To be fair I don't even think I was the first one to jump at Malthouse as an option - I'm just laughing at how slow the media is. I mean seriously, they actually had to hear it from Kevin Bartlett before they thought of it. KB. The bloke who wouldn't know if his nose hair was on fire.

Given Dew took over stoppages in 2012, the year they won the GF. I doubt this years numbers are Dew's fault. 1 bad year does not make the coach bad. People told us that Betts poor form in 2013 was a good reason not to get him because he was cooked. How short sighted does the look now. One lower year

Oh year, can I let you know something..... Free kicks for and hit out to advantage are contested possessions. Come back to me with the drop in Hit out to Advantage that can be attributed to the loss of Mumford...... Last year they dropped a massive 10 hitouts from the previous two years. I don't have the hit out to advantage stat, but I bet there are a lot of cp's lost due to that.
Listen to what most Sydney fans have to say about their midfield setups since Dew started and you'll see they're not happy. And it's not just this year, there's been discontent for a while about the Swans getting smashed in the middle. Sydney brought in Francou as another midfield coach this year after last year's poor midfield performance.

Sydney actually have a higher frees for average this year than they did in 2013, so that hasn't contributed to the dramatic decrease in contested possessions.

I agree that losing Mumford is obviously a big contributing factor in the lack of clearances but Dew hasn't been able to develop a gameplan to counter this over the last two seasons despite having Kennedy, Hannebery, Jack, Parker, Mitchell etc who should theoretically dominate the clearances. Dew's failure to adapt has to be a worrying sign. He hasn't shown any ability to mold his own game plan and has only coached at 1 club, another worrying sign.

Back to stats, the loss of Mumford and the probable decrease in hitouts to advantage doesn't fully explain the massive drop of 16 contested possessions per game over the last 2 years. That is an absolutely huge drop.

Was interesting to see how those who know Dew's coaching abilities best treated him:

Paul Roos - tried to get him to Melbourne to be his coaching successor.

Longmire/Swans - refused to release Dew from his contract and wanted to keep him

I'm sure Eddie Betts would love him here. Not going to happen.
Now wouldn't that be interesting??

Yep will not happen. Mick's just bored and clearly no one's offered him a media gig yet. Which they may never do

Write a book Mick. There'd be plenty of people interested to read it. Time to step back, rehabilitate your reputation after the hammering it's taken lately, then reinvent yourself using the part that wasn't trashed, namely your wealth of insights over many years.

Then someone will find a job for you in AFL. But it won't be at AFC

Not sure how I'd feel about Mick coaching us. He is proven and is capable of taking on the responsibility of coaching big clubs with high expectations and I wonder if our group of highly competitive players might really benefit from the polish Mick could bring. I'm not sure it's the best idea for him to be coach, but I'm not ruling it out as a bad idea.

My first reaction is to vomit.

If I step away from that feeling and try and be positive ...
  • he has the "father figure" thing
  • he's forgotten more about football than most coaches have known
  • he had the Pies on top of the ladder and dominating only 4 years ago
I will leave it to the footy gods to decide if this is a lesson I need to learn, one of forgiveness and turning over a new leaf.

So I'm getting in early.

I don't believe the Crows are looking for a coach, campo will get it.

What they are doing is identifying a replacement for Campo and identifying a director of coaching.

The question is will Jpod be there?

Oh and how's Eade feeling right now? I reckon he would have been top of the list to come to the Crows in some capacity and now he stuck in the GC.
