He would be hard to dislodge. His family are old rural money and deeply entrenched within the LNP, so he has a tonne of political connections. Likewise, he is deeply embedded within the media industry based on his time at 7.

Negotiating TV rights would have been a huge part of why he got the job.
 
That people are so naive to think someone who loves Aussie Rules is going to become AFL CEO and save the game is just ludicrous.
Every CEO will be a hand picked puppet just like Gil.
Let’s face it clearly no one wants a fairer fixture, black and white rules, no favourites. Just a CEO who runs a footy comp.

So you'd assume that if he's not at the AFL in 2 years time then something has happened

Yeah, the argument that the AFL is not technically a for profit privately owned corporation is naive.

There is a huge profit driven industry built up around it. Therefore commercial decisions are first and foremost and that's what guides decision making and hires, not "stewardship of the game" or even fan sentiment, if it's not being expressed in gain/loss of revenue for the AFL and various interested parties, like apparel and betting companies, stadium management, advertisers, media companies, online rights holders etc.

What’s Gil’s association with 7, other than having a brother there?

You make out as if he pulled strings to get the job. Don’t forget the NRL offered him the top job. He is, believe it or not, an astute businessman

the introduction of the academies to where someone like tarryn thomas is delivered to north melbourne, because he was playing in tasmania is utterly absurd. north melbourne did nothing for the kids development, but because the club was zoned to tassie, they get a first round prospect.

then you look at the affect free agency has had on player movement. where by clubs already playing finals benefited and were able to stay up for longer. salary cap pressure is not what it once was either, thanks to opening up the unlimited third party payments.

You say bulldogs just made the 8. We were 7th and 2 games from top. We were.miles ahead of nth in 8th position.

You need to get some context and perspective and maybe pay more attention.
 
Gale would be terrific. Multiple leadership roles in the AFL industry, I think he was the head or CEO of the AFLPA before Richmond, and he has been outstanding at Richmond and what hes done. Hes very intelligent, a good, honest man and highly rated in the industry. Would definitely be a leading contender.

I would much rather he stay at Richmond though because he turned a trainwreck into an off field powerhouse and now pretty damn strong on field over recent years. Finals 5/last 6 years and a flag, so hes driven success in both aspects.

An astute businessman in what way?

Honestly I doubt the likes of Gale would be challenged by the job intellectually. Salary/prestige is very high, challenge/job satisfaction very low.

Need someone who has spent a fair bit of time beyond the wall in the northern frontier so legitimately understands the challenges facing non traditional state teams, Greg Swan or David Noble when they have finished their job at the Lions would both be good choices.
