Now that the 2016 season has drawn to a close and the main contenders of Cripps, Docherty and Weitering have had another year of experience under their belt.

Who stands out as the one who will next be a Captain of the Carlton Football Club?

The 3 i have mentioned, i believe are the strongest candidates, with Cripps still being my preferred option.

I believe Cripps has all the makings to be a dominant follow by example captain, and nothing he has done has questioned me otherwise. Docherty just bleeds navy blue, and has show tremendous improvement both in terms of on field output and leadership output this year. Weitering is all class and so dedicated to his craft and would make another excellent option.

For the first time since in a decade, we have numerous options to next take up the leadership role once Murphy hands it over, with all 3 being formidable options.

Who do you think it should be?

It doesn't matter who it is, you can't see their face anyway :

Haven't we done this before?

Is Murphy retiring? Doesn't he want the job?

Doc for next captain. They don't have to be your best player but they must lead by example, understand the game and continue learning about the game and be able to convey a message. Doc is a coach in waiting by all accounts.

Docherty. The way he trains. The way he treats the younger lads. The way he directs traffic and is vocal.. he has huge internal wraps on him and Bolton LOVES his leadership style. He is our next captain.

Crippa would also do a fantastic job as captain of that I have no doubt. I think it would be beneficial to just allow him to play footy without having to worry about the extra pressure of captaincy and all the additional (time consuming) media commitments that come with that. Just let him focus on footy and become an even bigger beast than he already is now.

Weitering is potentially a great leader but by the time we do a captaincy hand over, Docherty and Cripps will be at the perfect age to assume the mantle. Would like to see him improve how vocal he is out on field. Is a pretty quiet and reserved and more of a leader by example type.

Nothing wrong with discussing this because Murphy will not be captain forever. It's a forum.. let people have a little bit of fun!

In my opinion, 2017 will be the last year that Murphy is captain before we do a hand-over and let him finish the last couple of years of his career without the extra burden of captaincy.

Hope Murph captains our 17th premiership, and Weitering captains the next 5...

Weitering is the obvious choice for me. The poise and leadership he's shown at just 18 years of age, makes you wonder what he'll be like at 25...

Reminds me of this thread: https://www.bigfooty.com/forum/threads/our-next-captain.825351/ where Jamison was the clear favourite.

FWIW I reckon Doc is the best choice, but it'll come down to him and Cripps and we'll probably go with the midfielder again.

Most of our premiership success has come under KPFs or Ruckmen.

We do seem to go for the midfielders more often than not in modern times though.

1987-1997 - Kernahan - KPF
1998-2001 - Bradley - Mid
2002-2003 - Ratten - Mid
2003 - McKay - HBF
2004-2006 - Koutoufides - Mid
2007 - Whitnall - KPF/KPD
2008-2012 - Judd - Mid
2013-Current - Murphy - Mid

Out of the last 19 seasons, 17 and a bit have been under a midfielder as captain.

lets not make the same mistake we made with murphy. we're not gonna make our best player captain, we're gonna make our best leader captain. it should have been simpson but no use crying of spilled milk. but l like the idea of the captain playing behind the footy setting everything up that's why long term we should be looking at docherty or weitering.

Sam Docherty (c)

The sooner the better. Probably official in Jan 18.

But the prep has started already.

Everything we have done and are doing under the Bolton, Silvagni regime is prep for Rd1 2018 and onwards.

That's when the action starts at the NEW CFC.

Docherty plays like Hodge (without the aggressive brain fades). He gets up the ground enough to reach all of his players and guide them. He is hard on himself and will never shirk the task. Perfect candidate.

Everyone could see when Murphy was appointed Captain, he was really a best available option. Cripps is a leader and will be our best player. I have no doubt he will make a great captain. He just oozes leadership and that lead by example mentality.

Seeing him and Bont, Captain V Captain would be amazing.
