I cant be bothered - and i wouldnt know where to find them - but i wouldnt mind someone listing Dangerfields achievements as a footballer
Being a captain doesn’t mean you’re the best player on the list

I’ll trust the club and players to nominate the best person for the role …they haven’t got it wrong the last few time in all seriousness

Wikipedia has a good summary:

  • AFL Rising Star nominee: 2009
  • Showdown Medal: 2012 (game 1)
  • Malcolm Blight Medal: 2015
  • Brownlow Medal: 2016
  • Leigh Matthews Trophy: 2016
  • AFLCA champion player of the year: 2016
  • 3× Carji Greeves Medal: 2016, 2017, 2019
  • 8× All-Australian team: 2012, 2013, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020 (c)
  • AFL premiership player: 2022
  • Gary Ayres Award: 2022
  • Tom Wills Trophy: 2022

In essence - 4 B&Fs, 8 AAs (equal-most selections ever?), a Brownlow, both the coaches' and players' awards, and voted the best player of a finals series that culminated in a flag (at 31 years of age). Personally think he's absolutely stiff not to have a Norm Smith as well.

I've just been told that it's a likely co-captains situation.

Stewart and Danger.

I'm actually not sure I buy it but this bloke is generally spot on.

IMO co-captains are often a cop out and an indication that a club doesn’t have a strong sole candidate. I’d put Simpkin and McDonald at NM in that category.

I’d be very happy with Dangerfield and Stewart as co captains though as I’m confident either of them would be very successful in the role on their own.

Danger has been VC for eternity, a complete pro with media and other public responsibilities, coming off arguably the best finals performances of his career. If captaining the club before he retires would be meaningful to him, he deserves the opportunity.

Stewart is arguably our best player (maybe equal with JC) and a wonderful on field leader. Any chance we had of the 2021 flag was lost when he got injured. My sense is that Stewart isn’t as comfortable with the media / public work as a number of others (including Danger), so co-captaincy could allow him to ease into things without the burden placed solely on him.

In short - could definitely see the benefit of co-captains for a year or two.

Why are we taking so long to appoint our captain? As if they don’t know the attributes of Danger, Stewart, Blics, etc by now, and it is not like the club is in an early rebuild and needs a generational change.

I don’t think the delay helps the new captain as he will want to be getting on with the job post Selwood.
Right now, all candidates are probably strutting their captaincy best attributes at preseason. It may come down to survival of the fittest ultimately.

They will be exhausted after strutting for months. It seems like an unnecessarily long job interview.
We just aren't used to no captain. It seriously is a minor issue in early Feb.

Could be interesting to see what happens in our two practice matches - who leads the team out and goes to the coin toss?

The same player each time, or maybe a final audition for the remaining candidates...

A couple of years back when Blicavs was VC, there was a match the was either the acting captain or at the very least, he was tasked with giving the final address before the players ran out - he spoke after the match about how much he struggled with that, how he got tongue-tied and something he'd have to learn to get better at if he was in that position again

Maybe that's the sort of thing they're still considering with their decision - some are more natural in terms of leading by example or their actions, while others are more comfortable standing up in front of others & being able to delivery an address, and they want to see how players handle those situations

This

We're not exactly a team that's void of leaders, and I'm quite sure that there's been plenty of players within the team who've shown their leadership capabilities across the summer

I can see how things would be different if it's a team in transition, or that has been down the bottom of the ladder for a period of time, and the role a captain can play/contribute over the summer

I disagree. The new captain should be in charge now.
Anyway, I only raised it as it is more interesting than guessing at the first round team.
He is- that is the point. We have multiple leaders.
And how often did Joel miss preseason?
Very.

You are confusing two different matters. No one is saying that we don’t have a number of leaders in the squad, and I would certainly hope so, in view in part of the age of the team.

This is separate from deciding on the captain, and letting him get on with the job of being captain in readiness for the coming season.

What would he do differently with the captaincy tag to what he is doing now at this stage of proceedings?'
Pretty confident the club will release the news at the right time .

Id think a week before our first trial game would be a reasonable deadline.

Id hope we can come to an arrangement that delivers a seamless transition... Those inside the club would know who the players look up to. I remember when Harley was appointed , I thought strange yet it was inspired. Timing is not as important as getting it right

Certainly not outrageous. One team champion players and men.

Is it Blicavs sitting next to Stewart?

We know nothing's been announced yet, but I really can't think of any outrageous choices (from the obvious shortlist of candidates) and that speaks volumes of the quality of leaders within our club

I still reckon Danger and Stewart as co's.

Please don't take my post seriously - was curious to see if I could stir the pot with that photo, as I really doubt we should be reading too much into it

But it's fun to see those elsewhere jumping to conclusions about what the seating positions mean

I’d love Blitz to be a Geelong football club captain.
He’s a true leader on the field, absolutely fierce and very vocal at all times throughout the game
