I doubt where they sit means anything.

The interesting thing about the team photo is that 7News tonight was actually discussing Essendon, including today being their team photo day and the seating position of players as they haven't yet made an announcement on their captain for 2023

Heppell is the incumbent captain, and while he hasn't stood down as captain he also hasn't been confirmed as the 2023 captain

During today's team photo at Essendon, Heppell was seated beside Scott in what they deemed the "captains seat"

They didn't make any mention of Geelong though, or at least not too that same extent

I think the players and coach are playing funny buggers with the journalists. This photo is a red herring IMO intended to amuse and bemuse the voices at SEN especially. Shortly after this photo, when the visitors were shown the door, the players will have assumed their real positions for the official photo. Danger swaps with Guthrie and Stewart swaps with Dunks. Simple.

Or maybe at this stage they haven't appointed a captain & VC, and so they took a range of photos with multiple players involved in a game of musical seats, and then in time they can pick which image they'll use

I think that would be a cruel thing to do to the players. It's one thing to have some fun with positions for the photo when the players know what's been decided and they're all in on the joke. It's another thing altogether to string players along with photos only to create a major disappointment for all but two of them.

Except we'd likely already have seen any photos which included different seating arrangements as the photos are likely the property AFL & not the club - a range of photos from each clubs media photos are already up on the AFL Galleries page, and wouldn't be surprised to see more included

For the Geelong media day, every full team photo shows the players in the same positions - so maybe the positions mean something or in a few weeks we could find out they mean nothing

It could be that season 2023 is the year that seating position on team photo day isn't as important or telling as in previous years - as of 14 February, none of Geelong, Hawthorn, Essendon & now Brisbane have announced their captains for season 2023, yet they've all had their media photo days over the past week

FWIW, Cameron said on radio yesterday that the players are yet to vote on a captain.

“There’s a few candidates, we’ve got Tommy Stewart obviously, we’ve got Danger in there, Mitchy Duncan.

“We actually haven’t really voted or anything on it yet, so in the next couple of weeks it’s all gonna heat up.”

Every player gets to say one word of the pre game rev up speech
Lucky Joel is retired then! Jimmy Bartel tells the story of Joel giving a rev-up talk to the boys one game. Joel said something like, "There's three things you need to remember", and he then listed 4 things.

Well he had to give 240 of them. To stay fresh they would have had to have gotten quite abstract.

I think someone spent too many weekends at a nxivm like workshop

Cam Guthrie and Mitch Duncan sitting either side of Chris Scott for team photo day :eyes:

As that team picture shows - the row their were with Chris Scott - Geel are spoilt for riches re the next captain - Hawkins - Danger - Cam - Mitch - Mark and Tom

Now what we dont know - is who on the training track and in the rooms at break times in games and actually during games - is the best leader - and most respected - and the players vote on that

Iwas keen on Danger to get it - simply because he was keen to get it - and he said - its all about the now - we want to win it in season 23 etc - and he has been a sensational player for Geel - week in - week out - and thus all the awards he has won etc

However to be perfectly fair - what we dont know - is how mature he is - like you go back to the 19 PF - 2nd qtr - Geel had one foot on Richmonds throat - like there is a GF spot up for grabs ( and it ended up against GWS - what a gift that would have been ) - and i thought in that qtr Dangerfield was terribly immature - hes laughing and carrying on at the centre bounce like a kid - pushing his face right into Martins face - so much so that Dustin Martin got sick of it and pushed him over - and i dont blame him for doing that

Where Geel were positioned in that game at that time - i think alot of Geel players current and past would have been totally focused on burying Rich - and not going on with the nonsense that Danger went on with - considering there was a GF spot up for grabs

Here's Tom Browne's thinking on things - welcome to take it or leave it, but he's going with Dangerfield having edged out Stewart with Scott a key supporter, and then he acknowledges " Officially, the Cats haven't decided"

Just name the new captain immediately. What are the reasons for delaying the announcement?

Just name the new captain immediately. What are the reasons for delaying the announcement?

So it can be announced at the season launch most likely.

Just name the new captain immediately. What are the reasons for delaying the announcement?

There's likely a few reasons

  • They haven't made that decision yet
  • They're still consulting with the playing group
  • A short list hasn't been put forward for voting on
  • Nothing's been formalised by the coaches & board
  • Wanting to see how things play out over the practice matches; potentially use both of the matches as audition opportunities to see how player/s step up in the acting captain role
  • We're not going to have a captain this year & instead will rotate the coin toss & final address duties amongst the senior players
  • They want to wait for the season launch and announce the new captain along with the leadership group all at the same time

We're one of 4 teams who haven't named a captain for season 2023 - looks like it's not much of a rush for a few teams

Seriously , would you like a job interview that took 3 months?

Captain of a sporting team is just slightly different a job interview & pretty sure they'd be going through different processes - but when looking at high level jobs, they can take a bit of time from application time to final interview

The new captain/s will be announced at the right time - the Club & playing group isn't wanting for leaders, and maybe they're all just enjoying the opportunity of all being on the same level, while the coaching group is enjoying the opportunity to observe what's happening in front of them without a declared captain
