I agree that we are bit light-on for obvious options aside from our current vice captains. Without a named leadership group aside Joel/Pat/Tom, it is hard for us to comment on who is driving standards at training, who is taking an interest in the development of our young players. Looking at on-field leadership, Aitkins and Zac Guthrie I feel have been impressive and vocal with setting up and directing their more senior teammates.
Zuthrie as captain? BF would melt

Of course the end is going to come quick. He is a 34 year old professional athlete in a sport where nearly all players don’t get past 32.

Thanks captain obvious
Some people here are talking as though Hawk will play on for another three seasons. The Captain Obvious call is not warranted.

IMO he’s not quite as good as he was in 2020. I expect next year to be his last.

The only person who thinks that Atkins it "too* fringe" is you. He's a lock now.
No, I agree with the assertion that he is too fringe. He is a lock for now, but it’s not like he is a dominant player in the mould of Duncan or Guthrie at their best. I could see Hopper or Parfitt forcing him out at some point, or Stephens with a great pre season.

So then its obvious he shouldnt be considered for captain then hey. Maybe you should reply to the poster who doesnt think its obvious rather then the one that does.

maybe you could also reply to this poster as well.

Have you told Hawkins that who's looking at playing on for at least another couple of seasons...

I think we’re at a bit of a Tom Harley type moment here.
Absolutely no one saw that appointment coming.

So, I think the players will vote for who they believe in. As in what’s said behind closed doors.

I’d probably go for Stewart for a few years and see which younger players evolve.

My second guess, Duncan.

When Harley was appointed, we desperately needed a culture reset which meant that a left-field candidate was accepted.

We don’t need to do that this time, the obvious choice will be made.

Stewart will be skipper.

I also noticed that from Zach with about 10 minutes to go - pointing out open teammates as options to kick to and directing traffic for setting up in defence. He really was the vocal player behind the ball

I know some would still have him as a player on the fringes, but I feel like he's offering & providing more than that of a fringe player who's trying to not lose their spot in the team. Watching him on Saturday, I felt he looked like a future leader

Just because some on here can’t see it doesn’t mean it isn’t obvious

He will make a leadership group in the future for sure.

I don’t think he will ever be captain but he is definitely a leader.

Cotchin isn’t doing that much media work, that’s more Riewoldt. Still a very good captain.
For a start, Cotchin isn't captain.

We've drifting a little from my original point, which is that like a CEO, an AFL captain is an organisational figurehead. However the latter has a much greater public profile and is therefore exposed to the potential of greater broad public scrutiny.

Now depending on the level of his introverted disposition, this could well factor in his suitability for the role. Though as I mentioned earlier, I think that he could (and would) grow into the role despite this.

But in the end it's frivolous speculation... and was a minor point in my OP, where I lauded him as my preferred captain post Selwood. For all we know Atkins is an extrovert, but from what little we have to make that assessment, the opposite appears the most logical conclusion.

Same here (sadly).

I suspect that Selwood goes this year, Hawk goes next year and Danger in 2024.

Danger is the only one of the three contracted past next year so that would make sense.

Pretty sure he was captain for three flags :)

What a ridiculous comment. stewart was arguably our best player along with cameron on saturday night. His ability to get to and influence contests he had no right to on saturday was phenomenol.

and he was our best player in our last high pressured game against richmond with all the crowd booing him.

stewart has become the best player in the team to deal with pressure. He now thrives on it.

atkins was missing for the first 3 qtrs on saturday. fantastic last qtr but where was he earlier?
So being the best player means they should be captain? That's the criteria?

I'd prefer to look at the best leader being the captain

Sometimes that will be the teams best player, but not sure that's always the case as there's times that the best player isn't the best leader

Yes, exactly.
The captaincy is not a reward or perk. It goes beyond being an example. A leader is able to separate himself from his own game, a great player can be very self-absorbed with his own.
Not impossible to combine the attributes, just shouldn't be first box ticked.

Why the hell is there a commercial aspect there? Nothing about success Or even striving to improve or achieve.

they are terrible values for a football side.
They would be terrible values for a football side.

Fortunately they are the values for the Geelong Football CLUB not the Geelong Football SIDE. There is a big difference between the 2. The club exists for more than just winning football games and the values reflect this.

Your expectation that every player should be at their best for every minute of every game is borderline psychotic.

No player has ever done this.
