Back on topic please - discussion of potential new Captain: Holmes, Guthrie Snr or Jnr etc

Not sure an individuals religious beliefs or non-beliefs would be a key selection criteria regarding ones suitability as team captain

Unless said individual is forcing their own beliefs onto others, using their own beliefs to discriminate against, exclude others etc, in which case I'd suggest that they wouldn't even be in consideration for captain and potentially even questions over their spot on the list

Can we just have Selwood the pepetual captain, even after retirement?
I just can't see a Geelong club without the Greatest Captain of all time.
Captain coach, but where they don't actually play?

I picked Tommy Stewart, but in hindsight, I think Danger free of the shackles of premiership starvation will become the leader we need in this time of crisis. Expect a man who's play will elevate now he knows he doesn't need to do it all by himself.

Tend to agree. We need someone who knows it's transitional and shorter term and someone like Danger would be perfect.
Someone to take the edge off losing Selwood yet continue that legacy for the next crop of leaders.

I actually don't mind the Idea of Mark Blicavs in the Tom Harley style of captain. multiple b and f, clever, tries hard, could do worse for a year or 2.

However Dangas is the likely and acceptable candidate.

A pretty sad day, ridiculous shoes for anyone to fill after Joel.
I think we’ve got some emerging leaders in Atkins and Holmes, maybe Cooper if he can cement a spot.
I don’t think Stewart is the right choice, he is a leader but more of the Chapman, Scarlett type than the football club captain. There’s a lot of off field stuff that goes with the job.

I think we need a mature player to take it for a couple of years before a younger player is ready. Blicavs and Guthrie would both be solid choices.

But it really needs to be Danger, he’s the only one who can go anywhere near filling the void by Joel. He won’t be the same but he is already doing a lot of leadership roles for the club. It would be fitting for him to take the last part of his career as club captain as he tries to lead to the team to another flag.

If you are going to pick the best candidate/player/person then there is only player in the running - and that is Jeremey Cameron by a million miles

And it is totally irrelevant that he has only played the 2 seasons with Geel - because he has got onfield leadership in bucketloads

Watching Geel play this year - Cameron at Centre Half Forward is like the Conductor of the Orchestra - and no matter who kicks the goal ( even when Kolo got one ) Cameron congratulates them enthusiastically - as to say - well done - your important to the team

Plus Cameron is a very strong player - when he was very young at GWS he had a bit of old fashioned dirt in him - he is a very strong player

Cameron would be an outstanding captain for Geelong - they wont give it to him - but they should

Stewie should be the captain and has great support around him and would have learned off the best, now is his time.

Given it relates to the next Captain: Do we think it could be a good idea to reserve the number 14 now for Captains of the club? Or do we borrow from an American tradition and retire the number entirely? It feels wrong to just hand the number on to the next guy...I feel sorry for the kid that gets it next.

I think the options will really come down to just a few players - most have pros or cons attached.

Hawkins - unlikely given next year most likely his last
Duncan - has 1-2 years left but whilst I think he's a solid citizen, I'm not sure he's a leader
Blicavs / Guthrie / - same reasons as above
Danger - possibly, but will they appoint for just 1-2 years. History says no
Stewart - for some reason I'm not sold. The 4 week suspension and a few little things since just leave me unsure?

My guess is they'll go with Stewart as he's a longer term proposition and I think that's what the club will want.

Given that Dangerfield has been elected President of his own peer association, I'd suggest he's both a candidate on talent and leadership.

Nah, do what we did with the number five - retire it out for a little while, then circulate it back through.

Cameron wont want to be captain it's too much media etc which he doesnt like (he likes his solitude away from footy) but yes i agree he would be a great candidate.

Realistically it will be Paddy or Stewart. The other poster nailed it it's tricky as Paddy deserves it but if he takes it for 2 years and retires (like ling did) stewart will be too old to be captain by then so i can see stewart being picked as he has more years left in him. But either would make me happy, or even duncan frankly, we have a lot of good leaders. If it's a short term captain like paddy or duncan then we are bypassing stewart and giving it to someone like holmes or sdk once they retire.

Now you have mentioned him - i think Mitch Duncan would be pretty good
