Captain Cam and VC Mitch?

View attachment 1607006

Ha saw the team photo on the other thread and did some research from previous years.

Selwood sat to CS' right in 22, the previous 3 years he sat to his left, then i couldn't be bothered.

So the captain can sit either side of CS but to win the premiership the captain must be to CS' right. Welcome Cam as our new captain.

I looked back a few years - Joel seemed to swap over the years

I think we're conditioned to the idea that the captain "must" sit beside the coach for the team photo and therefore the photoshoot is potentially giving a hint - doubt that's the case for a few team photos this year

Merrett and McGrath at Bomberland.
Expecting ours to be named on or b4 Thursday.
Nah they love keeping us (and the opposition) guessing for as long as they can. Even once it's announced, I wouldn't put it past the club to spring a late change! My guess is Guthrie. He's the only one to publicly say something as certain as "I don't think it will be me".

Essendon announced their new captain four days after Heppell stood down, Selwood retired on September 28th and we're still waiting....

I'm going with Geelong making no announcement and that we don't have a dedicated, single captain - instead they'll rotate captain duties amongst the playing group each week

St Kilda did that in 2003: Saints opt for weekly caretaker captains

I think we have a mature enough group that it could still be successful but I'd much prefer a sole captain (I can also live with co-captains if it was Dangerfield and Stewart).

They didnt exactly have a sterling field of leadership candidates though did they. We do which is one reason why it could be taking longer.

I suspect they already know, just hasn't been announced.

Justin L - the Freo coach ( they need a replacement for Fyffe ) has said he prefers the one captain option - he then added - he can be talked out of it - but he prefers the one captain

Hopefully Geelong - and the Cats are a very successfull club follow suit - Geel reigning premiers and all the rest of it - surely they dont need 2 captains

Yes when Ayres pulled the pin and the club was insolvent - yes - then you can have 3-4 co captains if you like - but Geel currently are the reigning champs - and a very experienced team - thus they only need one captain

Yet we went with BENNY GRAHAM, iirc, solo captain. He was excellent, imho.

What is it that a captain is expected to do which cannot be done as well or better by joint captains?
(apart from the coin toss)

It is conventionally thought that only one player can give the post game grand final victory speech. But with enough captains on your side you could try an acapella rendition of common post game themes.

Do we think they'll announce it before the pre season matches? Seems strange they're waiting so long if so.

Perhaps we won't have an official captain for these games and they'll save the announcement to be right before r1?

Times have changed - we used to almost prefer a middling player who would be missed thanks to the "captain's curse", for example

There seems to be a captains curse at Geelong. Whoever we appoint as captain struggles under pressure. Their performance drops and they get injured frequently. I suppose by appointing Harley, it can't get much worse. He is already massively injury prone, and not being one of our 'top' players, we can afford to carry him during form slumps.
