Next captain who and when?

I thought Minson as well.
He may make mistakes, but he is well spoken and does lead by example when it comes to effort. Already seems like a leader of sorts, creating the big man group at the club.

I wouldn't want to see Higgins or Griffen given captaincy. Higgins has played his best footy when he only has to worry about himself and Griffen just needs to continue being a gun.

Another one out of left field, but Addison seems like a pretty up front person and definitely leads by example. Listening to him speak after the Sydney game he came across as the kind of person who wants to push the club forwards in the right direction and had no hesitation telling it how it is. Probably the last person on everyone's list because everyone seems to hate his guts, but I wouldn't mind seeing him in the leadership group at some stage. Particularly if they keep him playing as a forward.

But yes, Wallis will be the next long term captain for sure.

Is the Minson suggestion really facepalm worthy? I don't think he'll get it but he'd one of the very few that ticks all the boxes.
Yes. Yes it is.
People bag Boyd for getting numbers but not really doing anything, yet suggest Minson. Personally I wouldn't be fussed if he walked for nothing (or whatever compo pick we get). He would be the worst captain in the AFL and that includes the dozens of GWS co-captains.

Mitch Wallis I think has to take over Boyd.

I think Boyd still has another bar minimum two years at the top so it will give a lot of time to Mitch.

*Talking about Minson being captain...NEKMINUTE.....Boyd bagging thread*

The old argument of 'Does the captain have to be the best player'. Well I'm not going to get stuck in to semantics but SOME people would suggest that Boyd IS the Bulldogs best player so that's before we even add in those intangible things like leadership, charisma, role model...

ha it was just a out of left field comment, but after watching the big boys eating club..the way he goes on the front front w/ the dogs why not...he bleeds footscray. But i am comfortable with boydy as the captain

Until recently I would have though Libba was a chance. He will redeem himself and isn't totally out of the picture still I don't think. 2-3 years is a long time in footy

I'm always of the belief that you should give the captaincy to someone who would have their game improve from it (ala Michael Clarke in the cricket).

This is why Minson would be a good choice. Would hopefully stop his brain fades...

But in saying that I do think Wallis is probably our next captain - Dickson a real smokey.

Griffen and Picken are definitely out; they hate speaking to the media and will avoid it wherever possible. Great players, people and mentors, but aren't captain material, and they're the first to admit that.
Wallis is definitely the next long-term captain (although Liberatore has definitely not given up his chance). One completely out of left-field though, is Lin Jong - with the kinda of courage he's shown already, he could be a no-brainer. Well spoken, educated and plays the game the way it should be played. Definitely not out of the picture.
However, I don't think Wallis will be ready by the time Boyd relinquishes the captaincy. Macca won't want to put too much pressure on Boydy in the last couple seasons, and likewise, on Wallis when he's young (Melbourne and GWS should learn from this). So we definitely need a "filler".
The leading runner for this, in my opinion, has to be Higgins. Just on the way he goes about his football and how he handles the media. Minson is a chance, but I honestly cannot see it happening - too many brain fades and we wouldn't want to risk those kinds of moves from a captain. Out of left field, Dickson and Addison are both in favour with Macca, and are both extremely well spoken and talented. Wouldn't be surprised if one or both were added to the leadership group next year.

This post illustrates our current predicament perfectly. When Brad Johnson retired we had 4 obvious candidates for the captaincy in Gia, Boyd, Cross and Morris, all of which would have done a more than capable job. Left Murph out as he is maybe a little too laid back although he could have been another option.
The fact that we cannot see an obvious leader in our mid age players, shows the lack of leadership on the ground this season.
Not to mention that a lot of our mid age players cannot even cement a spot in our best 22 at the moment really highlights the problem.
Cooney, Higgins, Grant, Wood, Williams, Sherman, Vezpremi all for one reason or another can't stay on the park (or maybe even the team) be it for fittness or form, and should have been able to provide an option for leadership.

Precisely, and our lack of consistent middle-aged players is why we're having to field so much youth as well. We don't have many players that could hold a captaincy role, but I'm confident we have a few gems that can keep everything under control while Wallis/Libba/Jong focus on their own development.
