Granted we are only half way through this season however in some respects it's the ideal time to see who can stand up leading into next year. i'm wondering peoples thoughts on our next captain. in my opinion the options ( without being captain obvious, ( no Pun intended ) ) are the below. with my thoughts also.

Howe - His game has gone to a new level and stays on the park ( bad timing lol ) and is super consistent. players seem to get around him and has a calmness about him.. his age however goes against him.

Sidebottom - Has captained the side already in his own right a few times and, his super consistent, doesn't miss any games literally. and has the players. Age is probably boderline. allthough given he is not the quickiest player anyway and given his resiliency his the type of player that can go well into his 30's

Adams - has been touted the captain in waiting for the last 2 years, personally i don't see it. he is consistent and certainly flies the flag. but he also is somewhat injury prone and get's reported as he does play on the edge, also i don't believe that he has the temperament to calmly lead the team as he is a hot head.

Treloar - his at a good age, leads by example both on and off the track, he does fly the flag not dissimilar to Adams however is far more measured when doing so. my only concern that he does have a little figjam about him which can rub teammates perhaps up the wrong way. not dissimilar to bucks early in his career. certainly in the running

Grundy - Great age, become(ing) super consistent. leads by example both on and off the field and is in the guts throughout the whole game which imo helps lead the team. seems super committed to the team also.

Moore - shows leadership qualities, but really hasn't actually done much when on the field and so far has been injury prone. also the commitment to the club is a bit unknown.

Phillips - his the dark horse for mine. in some regards he reminds me of sidebottom. his showing signs of being super consistent. he seems to set training standards and speaks extremely well and very astute. seems to be the loyal type and isn't necessarily in it for the $$$ and comitted to the club. next year might be a stretch as he would have just turned 23 but 2020 would be almost the ideal candidate assuming his continued growth
****ing ROFL at Moore

Rofl Adams, although he could carry on the tradition of Shaw and Maxwell as being the 22nd player in the side as well as the captain.
Suggest Shaw was a bit better than number 22* in the side (all puns intended.)

* in Shaw’s day as the premiership captain there was only 20 players. But I do take your point.

Maxwell was a better than ok player for most of his career, but your seriously under selling Shaw 2xAA, 2xb&f, norm smith medal.

Can’t understand the Adams love.
Simply barely in our top 25, let alone Captain material.
Yes, yes, I know we had Maxwell who scraped into the team on occasions. But Maxwell was a 100% better thinker and disposer of the ball that Adams could ever hope to be.
I cringe whenever the caller says “Adams” and wait for the inevitable turnover.

Right now nobody is ready outside Sidebottom.

Adams may have many of the desired leadership materials but lacks the consistent high level performance ideal in a captain and his tendency to clangers would not be desirable. Sidebottom messes it up on occasion but gets enough opportunity to right the wrong, so to speak. I am a huge fan of Treloar but would like to see his game go to the next level prior to captaincy. Grundy would be fine in a few years, Moore possibly but a few years away and a decent length contract away from that role. Phillips also years away.

Whilst Pendlebury wants it it’s his.

The next captain assuming Pendlebury stood down (in next few years) is all but guaranteed to be Sidebottom.

The only challenger I see, but apparently not his thing is the great Grundy.

He’d be sensational.
He’d even have Broomhead sweeping up behind him.
Ha ha. Are you suggesting Grundy leaves dirt behind him?

Sidebottom is the heir apparent. He's been around long enough, he's got a great footy resume, and he's durable. I'd agree with the way he plays, his body shape/size, he can play into his mid 30s. I'm hoping he'll become the clubs games record holder. So I think it would be worth it to hand the reins over to him maybe in 2020.

Oh man, seriously underselling Shawry.

He wasn't exactly physically gifted but he was a fantastic footballer and pretty much the opposite of the last man picked. I remember him vying with Millane for best player awards in Melbourne papers.

If Pendles stood down now, it's Rusty. No question. One of our best players, very comfy with the role and is well liked and respected.

If it's a few years, I'm warming to the idea of Phillips. I never thought I'd say that! Not because of the off field stuff... He's a very smart kid and would excel off the field. I was just wary of his kicking. Now that he's playing really good, consistent footy he suddenly looks a likely type.

Grundy would be great, but he wouldn't want it.

Treloar could be good also.

Guys like Adams and Moore need to focus on themselves.

I don't think we will be able to go past Darcy Moore within 3 years. Once he gets a fair crack at the game, he will dominate
Moore has a long, long way to go and can barely stay on the park. Grundy is my choice and not just because he forms my username. His fearless style of play sets the right example and he is constantly involved in the play. Maybe he is a bit laid back but I am sure he would grow into the role. Treloar or Sidebottom also have good credentials for the job.

I reckon Crisp is a smokey here.
I think you’re the first one to mention this.

It’s an interesting call. Agree a Smokey in time.

Probably overall won’t be but certainly in the Smokey category.

He also loves his pugs.

Good summation.

Grundy from reports just doesn’t like doing the formal leadership.
If he did, wow, he’d be sensational.
Smart intelligent- good guy.

Moore was touted early doors likely due to his natural maturity and intelligence.
Another good kid and smart.
But with his injuries he’s fallen in the pecking order.
And you need a great body of good form to earn that authentic authority.

Sidebottom will be captain even ahead of Grundy if it is available in next few years.
In my view he’s a lock.

After that time, the field is open. Who knows by then Moore might be the obvious one but that’s a long way away at this time.

Adams. Captain of the VFL that is.

He should be at risk of getting axed as on current form, there'd be 30 odd players that perform their role and overall play football better.
Nah. I would rather Hellier captain than Adams.

Adams should be in Gold Coast next season as part of Tom Lynch trade.
