My first thought was Ken McGregor.
He has the courage to lead by example.

Then I wondered whether Biglands might be savvy enough by the time Roo hands in the baton....no Ill stick with Kenny.

Stiffy could be groomed but Im not sure if hed be overlooked.
Biglands

Surely you jest TJ.

Bock could have 3 yellow jackets in the cupboard by then and be a certainty

It's scary to think how light on we are for candidates at the moment. We have always had such obvious choices in the past, and Stenglein (I know a couple of you don't agree) was the next 'certainty'. Without him the list is very shallow. As things stand at the moment Kenny McG is the only viable option in my opinion. But I don't think he is an obvious captain.

McGregor is the type of player who is solid, efficient, no-fuss, quietly go about his business type of player. I guess that's not much different to Stenglein, but Stenglein had that added hardness.

As other have said Scott Thompson could be a candidate in a couple of years. I haven't seen a lot of him but he strikes me as a Kane Johnson type of player, if I can compare him to someone, which certainly would make him worth considering. We seem so light on for future leadership that I wonder if the captaincy was even mentioned in recruiting discussions with Thompson. It's definately not an unreasonable aim for Scott further down the track.

Other than that I honestly don't think we have any captains in the making, unless you look really young and consider youngsters like Watts (not saying he has got what it takes, just an example). I really think we would be scaping the barrell with players such as Burton and Johncock.

At this stage my prediction is McGregor, with Thompson coming in as second favourite.

Thompson could be alright... Depending if he decides to go to Port Adelaide or not.

Kenny would be a good choice.. But I just can't see him accepting it, as someone else here said, seems more of a worker than a captain.

I could never see Burton saying No to it though.....

ANYONE who even considers Burton as part of the leadership group let alone as a captain should receive life ban on footy.

Honestly, the bloke might be a good leader off the field but on it he would be a walking disaster.

I didn't mean by my post that I think he should. 'Cause I don't.
Just meant that if it was ever offered to him, I don't think he'd say no.

I wasn't having a go at you or anyone on these boards. Some people in the media have been throwing up Burton's name and thats the thing that got me going:p

I agree. Either Reilly, Watts or Thompson, someone who puts their body on the line. Mind you, i'm not saying kenny doesn't, he's just too quiet.
If Kenny is quiet, then Reilly is practically mute.

He's a very shy boy. Very hard to get a word out of.

Having said that though, he does show some great leadership qualities in that he doesnt really talk about himself but instead focuses on more of 'what the team can do'. Impressive.

Despite his poor season (he was easily one of our best before this year), Burton actually seems like a good bloke, so lets not confuse his stupidty on the field this year with being some kind of ego case who would jump at being captain.
He was mates with my footy coach back at school and came in to talk to us in a Phys ed class. He actually marked an assignment of mine where i had used him as an example of both extreme skill and mistakes. I blasted him about something and he wrote on the paper 'give us a break mate' which as an 17 or 18 year old i thought was pretty great.
For anyone who cares he gave me '9/10 A very good effort'.

Don't even say Burton as captain, the thought itself scares me.

haha yeh he actually had an arrow coming from the part where i had a go at him to the '9/10' :p

At present I wouldnt pick him because he has a few holes in his game but a ruckman is in a cherry ripe position to influence his team when the chips are down....No? :(
I'm more concerned with his ability to think, which I reckon is pretty important for a captain.

Considering Roo wont retire for atleast another 3 years IMO, it doesnt matter to much if people cant see and obvious replacements just yet as the younger guys are going to be put in more of a position of responsibility now that Ayresy has gone and we have someone actualy contemplating the future. I think by the time the decision needs to be made the new leadership group could look something like:
Captain: Scott Thompson
Vice captain: James Begley
Deputy Vice: Brent Reilly

Really that group could be put in any order as it is a bit hard to tell what will happen in this time and if they will actually develop into the leaders i think they might. Add Watts,Johncock and Mcgreggor into that group aswell, albeit not in the main gig i dont think.

I guess its a good thing that the club has realised that there is not much coming through in terms of talent and more imporantly talent with leadership potential hence the appointment of Ray McLean. He is responsible for a specifically tailored program for the development of leadership within the Crows list.

A positve move IMHO given that we have no clear candidates.

well that's clinched it for me...............

point is - a captain needs to be someone who will be picked first time every week.
IMO - Burton does not fit into this catagory............why are we even having this discussion  :o

Hey i agree, possibly the stupidest idea of a captain anyone has put forward. Maybe Simon Goodwin was having a laugh when he came out with that? In any case i was just saying that he seems like an alright bloke.

The captain should not be a dumb footballer - so that rules out the likes of Burton, Biglands & a few others.
