i fail to see how johncock could be considered captain

i dont think he is a very good public speaker and i believe this ia a crucial component of any modern captain in todays game.

I know he lets his form do the talking but a players ability alone is not enough to be cosidered captain

and lets face it, his past record has shown he hasnt had the best off-field record in recent years

Dude Roo's a terrible public speaker. It doesn't count for diddly squat because the media and public respects Roo for being a great player so he doesn't have to do footy show appearances to make him look good. I think Truck should be captain and yes he is alot more media savvy but if you're a good enough player public speaing is unnecassary

Sorry for boring:( you perhaps you could list things you don't want to discuss and we will all compile with your wishes

Or even better, these whingers could perhaps start threads of their own on completely unique topics. Either that or ignore threads they arent interested in, rather than ruin the thread for those that might be interested.

Agreed.

I actually like the way that Roo speaks because he is honest, direct and answers the questions without ers and ums. You listen to him and he is so modest and humble that you can't do anything but respect this man who has been an enormous achiever in his chosen profession.

And yes, he is articulate.

He was on 5AA tonight about the same time as your post.
He was not only very well spoken but extremly interesting too.

agree jc - the only comment I can make though is that I am still waiting for his voice to break ;)

I did end up hearing that and have to agree with you that he did do that interview extremely well. However it's always bemused me that Roo, Macca and Goody have always been the players sought after by the commercial networks, none of them are natural media personalities such as a Shane Crawford, Fevola, Riedwvolt etc. Go back and watch some Roo press conferences and he's hardly an inspiring articulator.

I hope our next captain is:

Either VB or Thomson.
Stiffy.

Daylight.

Rutten. Too much of a "nice" player to be considered a future AFC captain. Unfortunately, doesn't have an ounce of natural aggression, a pre-requisite for any AFC captain.

A cookie cutter guy off the field maybe.

On the field, he was underrated for his hardness. This is the man who is responsible for Glenn Archers inability to clench a proper fist.

Not to mention Darryl Wakelin being able to eat a tough steak!

So, are you implying that Rutten isn't tough on the field? They call him "Truck" for a reason!

Hahaha, Oh god no!

Where did i mention Rutten at all in that post?

I think Rutten would be an outstanding captain, and i voted for him. The fact that his team mates rate him as a leader (See his inclusion into the elected leadership group).

We've had 4 captains haven't we?

McDermott
McGuiness?
Bickley
Roo

All mid-fielders who could set an example, get the hard ball, and natural leaders of men. Good ambassadors for the club off the field, and capable of speaking well in public.

VB strikes me as the player in our side who has all those characteristics, and surely will captain the Crows one day.

If Roo has one more year as captain, then VB will still be only 21 at the end of 2007, which is too early.

Reilly and Thompson will both be 24 at the end of next year. Give one of them them 4 years as skipper, and then hand over to VB when he's 25.

I like my captain to play in the middle.

I have no doubt that VB will one day captain-coach the Adelaide crows to glory. In the short term i see Rutten as the next captain. I also dont think the past captains should really be given much weight when it comes to choosing the new captain. The game, and the team changes every year.
