I can't speak for others but I was laughing at the notion that Beams would leave Collingwood to come to Port Adelaide, which is what you were suggesting. There was also the sublime irony in your slamming of Boak for being a mercenary and then in the next breath proposing that we throw the kitchen sink at Beams to get him to Port.

Boak is really not going to be affected by FA. He will be an RFA under current rules. This means we only have to match another club's offer in order to keep him, which we would be able to do since he is our highest paid player and the new offer is unlikely to be much more than what we are paying him now. If he wants to go it would have to be via a trade.

I think once a free agent nominates another club their position becomes untenable and it's not in anyone's best interests for the offer to be matched.

Note: This is a general free agency post and not Boak specific.

Averaged the most clearances and inside 50s for our club, so led from the front.

I think the addition of wines and the rise of brogsy and hartlett will take the heat off him. There will be no contract speculation so he will be able to focus 100% on football.

Next year will be his best year

Downside is that he is quite bad talking to the media

I think you are overly harsh on the boy BMT. He wanted to leave because of his mother, not because he doesn't love the club 100%.

He is certainly getting paid more than his output has warranted, but he has been suffering a groin injury and still has a lot of potential left in him. We were hoping he would improve before his contract ran out I'm sure, but I believe he will give you reason to love him soon enough.

If you extrapolate Boak's post-foot surgery form over a full year, he would've been 12th in the competition for contested possessions and equal 2nd for clearances. I see no reason that he can't meet a similar standard over a full year if he can stay fully fit. He won't ever be Nathan Buckley or James Hird, but he could be Sam Mitchell or Josh Kennedy.

For the record, Boak has always signed 2 year contracts and seems intent on doing so for the rest of his career.

Secondly, he was under enormous pressure to return home and despite the pressure he decided to stay which speaks volumes for his character and commitment to his team-mates and club. His salary at Geelong wouldn't have been too different to what he's getting paid here. Whatever was posted on the Geelong board and whatever Scott said doesn't change that he's one of the best players in competition and would rightly deserve a chunky pay cheque. When Boak is fit he wins games off his own boot and racks up Brownlow votes like Mecca racks up pilgrims. He's our finest choice for captain and will rightly be wearing the #1 in 2013.

I was overseas for most of the season but all I seemed to read was about how Boak was gone but the whole time he was going to wait till after the mid season break regardless. Once the actual talks started he signed up pretty quick didn't he?
