Sorry if this thread has been done to death, but I wanted to know who everyone thinks will be Adelaide's next captain. Roo is getting towards thirty and the other members of the "leadership team" are heading that way as well, and so aren't ideal replacements.

IMO Kris Massie looks to be the most likely, especially considering that he is one of few in the right age bracket. Stenglein - maybe, but his form last season wasn't promising. Brent Reilly could be a long-term appointment.

Thoughts?

Has to be someone inspiring who can lead from the front, isn't afraid to put his body on the line and is also vocal - able to put a rocket under his troops when needs be.

Graham Johncock could more than fit the bill as he matures both as a man and a footballer.

Its a bit early at this point, as there is no clear candidate.
But don't be surprised if its not an obvious choice.

If I remember correctly, Bickly was not an obvious selection.

You would probably normally mention someone in the 23-25 year old bracket, but the problem is we are devoid of standout talent in this age bracket. I expect Roo will do the job for a few more years yet & it will go to a younger player - perhaps Watts or someone we haven't even drafted yet.

On paper, everything you've said above is correct. However when Blighty cleaned out our leadership group at the end of 1996, I don't think too many saw Mark Bickley as the obvious choice, and he was an outstanding leader. The same could well apply here.

If a new captain were to come from the current squad, perhaps it would be Stenglein, McGregor, Johncock or Biglands, with Stenglein the favourite if he recaptures his 2002 form.

Stinger is the standout of these 4 IMO. Kenny solid type but not really inspirational, Stiffy probably too quiet & don't really see Biglands being cluey enough to be a leader. Could be wrong though. Still reckon Roo will be the captain forn the next 2-3 years & a younger player will be appointed.

I think you're a bit ahead of yourself, neither massie nor reilly have established themselves in our best 18. Cart meet horse.

Stenglein needs to established himself as primary option in midfield before he can be considered as captain material. last season raised a question mark or two as well.

Roo will likely be captain for another 3 - 4 years, by which time you'd hope things would become more clear.

if he got hit by a truck tomorrow (touch wood), I am thinking goodwin or edwards.

I've always been a big wrap for Johncock, and I've always said I'd like him to be the next captain. Nothing in the last twelve months has changed my mind on this.

Massie has no chance at this stage. He hasn't even established himself as a regular player and in my opinion probably never will. I like the guy but he is not the captain type I believe.

Stenglein - maybe, but his form last season wasn't promising.

Stenglein still had a better year than Massie. He was down on his previous couple of years but was still a certain starter in the 22 every week.

Is clear favourite to be next captain in my opinion. Leads from the front with his courage and attack on the ball and his attitude is first class. Whether he plays full time in the midfield or not is irrelevant. There's no reason a defender can't be a captain.

Brent Reilly could be a long-term appointment.

Could be but it's impossible to know. He's done nothing at this stage to warrant even being considered.

Johncock is too flashy and at times undisciplined to be considered a captain at this stage. Maybe in a few years he may improve this area but right now he is a long way off.

If it isn't Stenglein then I think it will probably be one of the older guys like Goodwin or maybe even McLeod to have the role for a couple of years a la McGuinness. Both are younger than Ricciuto. Or maybe even Ben Hart - he will probably still be around when he's 40.

Kane Johnson would've been the ideal candidate.

****

When I mentioned Reilly I meant that he would be a long-term appointment after the next possible captain - as he would still be fairly young.

Rhett Biglands.
Hes got the potential and being a Ruckman can certainly inspireon the field because hes around the ball ups

Johncock possibly; but its an off field role too -Maybe he will become used to it.

Captain: Tyson Stenglein
Vice Captain: Fergus Watts
Deputy Vice-Captains: Graham Johncock and James Begley

I think Stenglein would make a very good captain. To me he just appers to be a natural leader.

Fergus Watts with is style of play would inspire anybody. I am not sure about his "vocal" ability but I am pretty sure that will devel in time.

Johncock will mature by the time the captaincy is up for grabs and might well become captain but I think he will always be the sort of player who will win you a game in sensational bursts. I don't see him as a 4 quarter player. None the less a bloody good player.

Blighty said that Begley is the captain material. Who can argue that. He needs to cement a spot in best 22 and I think this is the year.

Captain - Matthew Pavlich
Vice Captain - Adam Cooney

You heard it here first.

Appointments to be made in 2006/2007 after Roo steps down from captaincy after claiming his second premiership as captain.

One would be nice. 2 would be bloody fantastic but both woud cost an arm and a leg which we probably won't be able to afford.

Yeah I know but maybe just maybe ......

Smart, Clarke, Burns, Carey make way fro Pav's salary. Pav is so desperate to come home after seeing his beloved Crows take the flag (Coming home does in no way mean even considering going to Port). We give them a couple of draft picks and a decent player and they accept coz he's coming no matter what and its all good.
:D ;)

****ed if I know how we'll land Cooney though.;)

According to Goodwin, he reckons Birdbrain .... whoops, I mean Birdman should be the next captain. I would prefer someone with footy smarts.

If young Reilly comes up to all expectations in the next few years then i can see him replacing the Roo when the time is ripe,

Stenglein, Shirley, Johncock & Massie are other hopefuls.

Shirley has got the chop once, now he's a possible captain?? - now thats a big step up

I like Reilly though, something about the way he carrys himself on the football field, which says he's a natural leader.
Got to keep him first.
