Next Collingwood Captain?

Not sure if this has been discussed before....

18 months ago I would have said Rocca was a shoe in....
IMO rather than give it to an older player who may give us another 2-3yrs, I would prefer it go to a younger player who could lead the side for 7 - 10 yrs....For this reason I have also discounted Clement.

Some suggestions...

Didak - (needs another year or 2 to grow out of his bogan cast)
H. Shaw - (has CAPTAIN written all over him)
Fraser - (Still needs to prove himself by playing consistant top line footy alla Big Cox)
T. CLoke (another who lookes likely of being able to lead a time one day)

Does it make a difference if your captain is a midfielder or a KPP? In my mind, J. Brown is the most impossing figure in the comp hence would make a terrific captain for Bris...

We don't really have a standout successor to Buckley who can serve that 7-10 yrs...You could appoint CLement or Rocca but for how long? 2-3yrs?

atm i think jimmy clement would be captiain for sure, he is reliable, and a very goood leader

Clement should get it for a couple of years after Buckley because he deserves it, and because I don't think there's an obvious alternative. By the time, Clement relinquishes it, hopefully H Shaw is ready to assume the captaincy. If he can build on his performance this year, and keep his nose clean, Swan might be a chance too.

Didak is brilliantly gifted but he's a lair. He's not captain material IMO, perhaps you could make him vice-captain.

Why's Heath Shaw got captain material written all over him? Because he's a Shaw, that may seem an odd statement to write. He's got leadership qualities but so do others.

Agreed guys i think Jimmy Clement should get the captaincy.A great player and will be a good captain.Vice captain i believe should be Josh fraser.He will be a future leader with Travis or dids not far behind.

H. Shaw is one of the guttsiest players on our list. Any bloke who backs into packs, puts his head down going in for a hard ball and comes from the Shaw bloodline is captain material in my books. Don't forget his Dad and Uncle both captained the Magies. He plays like an old fashioned footballer. Not much flair but ALL guts!

Someone who went to the Copeland Trophy came on here and said Shaw will be a certain captain of the club. Just wondering how it comes about? His speech, his respect from peers, etc. We all know he is a leader on the field and his tough way of playing the game adds to his leadership, but the comment just seemed so certain.

I personally think Bucks will captain in 2007, and then a Shaw and/or Fraser will take the role. Clement will always be a vice captain, but his age probably is a factor that won't give him the full title. He and Rocca have each captained the club in double figures (Rocca has anyway), and Shaw and Fraser are likely to be inducted into the leadership group and expected to take over.

I think Bucks for 1 more year then give it to Josh Fraser. Jimmy Clement will only have 3 years approx. left once Bucks pulls up stumps.

I think the added responsibility and need to lead by example will see Josh Fraser become the player we all thought he would be when he got drafted.

See how much he showed when we stopped playing Guy Richards as his back up, with Josh knowing that he had to do it. SEE WCE game at Subi-by all reports he out pointed Dean Cox and we probably lost the game, as Josh had been quite dominate but, needed a blow with about 5 minutes remaining. WCE got on top during that last 5 minutes.

Heath shaw has only really played one year of football, not many people get the captancy after the 3rd year as we presume when the next capitain is announced in 2008, only the special players like bucks and carey get such an honour.

I believe it should go to josh, hes been one of our best players and ruckman get better with age, still the best to come for him!

Fraser seems the safest & best option.

He is teriffic off the field,speaks exceptionally well & you never see him in the headlines for the WRONG reasons.

I also think the captaincy will take his game ON the field to a new level.

I’ll make a stupid typical Collingwood supporter ridiculously early call that I actually think has some merit. Dale Thomas is captain material. I know he’s only played one season and he might not ever get much better etc etc etc. The way he played in the final v The Dog’s topped his year off for me. He was one of the few who actually attacked the ball and played with enthusiasm in the second half. I like the way he plays. He has Gavin Brown courage and Alan Didak flair. That is actually not a common combination. I hope he is allowed to be attacking and continue to play with confidence. If he can become a centre square midfielder of note he has captain written all over him.

I actually think we lack leadership but if Thomas and Heath Shaw can develop for another 6 or 7 years like they look capable of right now then they could make a good combination. A hell of a lot of water top flow under the bridge yet though. Meanwhile we are in strife. Fraser lacks presence for a big man, Burns is too old, Clement is nearly too old, Lockyer is not good or brave enough, O’Bree is a front runner and often a counter productive play stopper that we should trade, Rocca hasn’t strung more than a couple of games together for years now, Didak is undisciplined, untidy with his feet and not overly brave and there is no one else except maybe Licuria. He is captain material except that his form has fallen away in recent years and there are doubts about his ability to hold down a midfield spot.

Normally I can people for saying young players will be captains. I have come to believe we don’t have many options though.

Totally agree I don't see Thomas being under Shaw but I do see Shaw being under Thomas , your captian has to be able to exert some sort of influence on games as well as be courageous and skillful. Shaw imo would make a great VC much like Burns is to Bux but your captain is usually also your best player who commands respect , which in a few more years i can see DT being.

But for now leave it with bux then hand it to either Clement or Fraser.

MarkT I've said this before but I think we may players that can be captains but we don't lack leadership at all. Also I am confused, Didak is not captain material partly because he is untidy with his feet?
