Didn’t he have a heavy involvement in starting and running the African AFL players group? I think it was set up to support and attract more players of African nationality to the game.
From memory was part of our diversity program while playing VFL for us

Hope nothing changes where we may be at risk of losing access to Hok next year…
Does anyone know if anything will impact our NGA’s over the next few drafts?

I'll do some digging but it will take time
AFL love to change things monthly with NGA

If boundaries are to change the logical and fair thing to do would be to allow players who have entered the NGA system under a particular club to stay in that same club's NGA group until their draft year(s). However from the date the changes are announced newly registered NGA players should not be able to join the old club's group but would only be eligible to join the group of whoever now has been assigned their locality. Even if they had a sibling who had progressed (or was still progressing) under the other club.

This arrangement would certainly protect our investment in Hok, the younger Luals and others, and should ease your concerns.

However we know that logic and fairness are not a strong suit of the AFL. I am not at all optimistic they will handle it competently.

NGA has compromised one of key pillars of equalisation.
There are only 15 active NGA players in the comp ATM
Father son and Northern Academy have done more damage

Father son have done no damage at all. If you breed your own players you should keep them.

Everyone has access to father sons, fair to all.

Get rid of NGA and northern academies.

Not everyone has access yet.

Which father/son prospects can the Tassy Devils tap into in the next 25 years?

[EDIT: I just read that the AFL are changing the FS rule to allow kids of Tassy born players to be drafted to the Devils as Father Sons. FFS, Andrew! 🤦‍♂️ ]

Or GWS and GCS f/s prospects in the next 10-15?

The northern academies aim was in part to redress that disadvantage (but of course they are also there to make sure the AFL's investment in these new clubs doesn't go down the gurgler).

That doesn't justify the academies for Sydney and Brisbane though. They have always had access to father-son prospects through the former South Melbourne and Fitzroy clubs. They have an outsized advantage from the various leg-ups they've been given. Since 2000 these two clubs account for 6 of the 24 flags (25%) and one or both have appeared in 12 of those grand finals (50%). Their combined GF appearance count in that period is 27% of all clubs appearing in GFs.

Against this GWS has had only one GF appearance. GCS hasn't even made the finals in 14 seasons. There's a case for continuation of the academy system for those two clubs. The others should be opened up more equitably.

The only teams that should have NGA are the Suns and Giants. Until they have been around long enough to have some FS come through. Interesting to see TAS will be given FS access to all TAS born players who have played in the AFL, despite not existing as a club.

My biggest gripe with the NGA, is teams being able to take multiple top end players like the Suns have a couple of times. Should be capped at one first round caliber player only. Will free the any other guns at the top end of the draft. Or even better, only allow two NGA selections all up. It is not like any AFL team get 3 first round ranked Father Son picks in a single draft, yet alone across all rounds. So why should some teams have 3-4 eligible NGAs? If it's somewhat designed to compensate for the lack of FS?

I missed the bit about Tassy having access to sons of AFL players who were born in Tasmania. Is it any player who was born in Tassy no matter if he only played 1 game? Or does he have to qualify with 100 games?

Whatever it is, that is just so typically AFL-dumb. The whole point of the FS scheme was to keep the tradition of players from the one family playing for the same club.* This exercise in expediency undermines that, although I'm sure they'll put plenty of spin on it if challenged.

* The father-son rule is reported to have been set up to allow Ron Barassi to play for Melbourne who his father had played for. His father had been killed in Tobruk in WWII and there would have been plenty of sympathy for the families of those killed in action.

I'm not sure on the in depth details. But I may have read that the FS eligibility will be less than the standard 100 games as well. Don't trust me on that one though.

But I agree on the rest of your post. It is stupid given that the Father Son rule is about the CLUB that was represented, not one that still doesn't even exist. Might as well call it State Son rule.

Here’s a list of the proposed AFL list concessions granted to the new Tasmanian Devils team:
  • Academy zone access to Tasmania
  • Up to 10 pre-listed 17-year-olds for the 2027 draft
  • Access to multiple Tasmanian 2026 draft prospects who opt out
  • Multiple early rookie and mid-season draft picks
  • Selections at the start of round two onwards
  • ~10 first-round picks across three drafts
  • Access to uncontracted players as ‘free agents’ across two trade periods
  • Sign-on bonus fund of over $1 million
  • Multiple 17-year-old mini-draft picks to trade
  • Access to Tasmanian father-son

Not everyone has access yet.

What about Freo….they got absolute shafted up in their set up

That picture of Jaxon 😆. He looks like as fruity as his old man

Hope nothing changes where we may be at risk of losing access to Hok next year…
Does anyone know if anything will impact our NGA’s over the next few drafts?
The small whispers of

Dogs, Bombers and Blues metro area will be pushed back a bit
Allowing north to have more inner city areas

I would guess we lose Seddon and Spotswood

North likely to get a lot of Richmond Country areas as Tigers NGA investment haven't been massive in those areas

Everything is subject to change

It was an incredible game albeit against weaker opposition.
Lucky he isn't draft age until next year

Maybe we can hide him a bit
That horse has already bolted, he is an absolute jet. Even when he doesn't get as much of it as he did at the weekend he just has that aura about him that all good small forwards have. He is busy and involved in every play around his zone, getting a hand in to disrupt movement or apply pressure. It's a real shame we couldn't get him this year, he is exactly what we lack.

Next year is a bumper draft for us really.

Two top class NGA kids, Cooney and West.

Let the whinging begin
