Len Fitzgerald arrived at the club in 1951. He and wife Beryl (pictured) introduced the Melbourne club song “It’s a grand old flag” because as Len pointed out, “you can easily substitute the words red and blue to double blues”.
The song was first used by the club during the period when Len Toyne coached (1950–1951).

It is understood that Norwood introduced “It’s a grand old flag” during their coach Alan Killigrew’s time (1959–1962).

Watched the pre-match entertainment with the Next Gen boys last night and some of them look ok.
It's really hard to know for sure since we don't know who is who with age groups but I did think the skill were in general pretty good.
Really liked a couple of the midfield, number 14 & 18 for Tex's team (in the hoops) and 19 for Sloanes. Nice skills and speed.
a Few bigs, 2 for Tex, 22 (who I think was the kid from south) and 16(could be 19, memory is a bit dusty, he played a bit in the ruck and killed it). For Sloane's the was a tall blond lad who did a lot right Played in defense for most.
There was definitely talent out there which could prove interesting in the next few years.
