Clayton did his hammy I believe which is why he retired hurt, not great timing.

I am a fan of Tim Ward but he is a few years older than the other guys being spoken about (barring Hunt). Feel like he'd be spoken about in a different light if he converted a few more starts- he is a bit stiff that neither of his tons against Eng Lions count towards his FC record.

Jason Sangha another worth a mention, he is looking very classy right now. Best I've seen him bat.

From watching a lot of replays of various competitions and combined with my playing own experiences both now and in years gone past, nothing will change my view that the standard of out cricket pathways has dropped dramatically and through a number of factors the hard edge of Australian community cricket and by extension Premier / Grade and then First Class/List A with it. Talent is still there but it’s essentially untested. Obviously the biggest issue is batting.

The remaining three rounds of Sheffield Shield are tremendously important for a number of players and coaches and administrators because what they are churning out is very much below what we have been accustomed to

Hell, I was thinking the talent coming through at the moment is the most promising in years.

..and more experienced. Not ancient, still 27. Converting has been his achilles heel since his juniors in Sydney. This year he has been out in the 90s twice, which is certainly a step up from the habitual 60/70s of the past. He followed those with a polished 140 in his next match. Sure to please selectors.

Ditto. Take the pick of these kids that walloped future Pom players in the Junior Ashes (U19) 18 months ago. Sam Konstas, Harry Dixon, Hugh Weibgen, Ryan Hicks, Lachlan Aitken, Joel Davies, Charlie Anderson, Mahli Beardman, Raf MacMillan, Callum Vidler. And there were others that took the Aussies to series wins in both Australia and England. Those six in bold have already announced themselves at shield level.

In cricket, talent is basically the raw ability to hit a ball with an instrument.

If talent is what you want then recruit our best hockey players into the cricket team. They have as much “talent” as any FC cricketer.

I would take a lot less talent though, in favour of right mindset, good footwork and technique.

Following those Junior Ashes boys, are a crop of budding teens, Aidan O'Connor (TAS), Louis Smith (TAS), Will Malajczuk (WA), Oliver Peak (VIC), Simon Budge (WA), Addison Sheriff (NSW), Steven Hogan (QLD). All playing Club 1sts and most 2nd X1 cricket. One or two are still 17.

Raw athletic talent and genuine cricket talent are very different. Footwork, mindset and technique would be in my view part of the requirements of Cricket talent even if the runs on the board and time in first class cricket aren't there to back it up.

Unfortunately they are not - technique is now largely ignored

All they are talking is raw athleticism / hand eye

We are going to need to back talent in I would suggest.
It sounded like some people were against the Connoly selection. May as well go with the kid with more potential offering up the same as the mid 20s guy. May not eventuate but long term should bode well

Stagger me how bad the basic technique is these days. The fundamentals of cricket are always going to be required.

Not if he’s got a technique that means he’s completely unsuited to playing on spinning pitches (split grip) and he’s never taken a First Class wicket. He was set up to fail and did so.

Jeez Callum Vidler looks super quick. He's raw but he has all the attributes to be a very very good bowler in time, same goes for Beardman. Qld are loaded with young bowling talent right now, I think we might see a few heading to other states to get opportunites. Tom Balkin who has been playing for the Qld 2nd's simply looks far too good to not be playing shield, but I don't think he will chances for the Bulls considering the Neser, Steketee, Bartlett, Straker, Whitney, Vidler, Guthrie queue in front of him

I thought Vidler looked quick too, but the commentators were suggesting he's only in the 130's?

Very much doubt that, he was significantly quicker than Guthrie and Bartlett who we know around around the mid 130 mark. Beardman and Vidler were clocked in the mid 140's at the start of last year during the u19 WC

Mitch Owen makes 149 off 69 for Tasmania in the One day match vs SA.

With his BBL form, he's basically bashing the door down for selection for Australia's next white ball series.

Seems like he's definitely a promising white-ball cricketer. Does he have any red ball potential? I haven't seen enough of him to know if he's got a sound technique behind what is clearly a very good eye and power.

Eh. Probably ends up an okay red ball batter but his bowling is pedestrian for the level

Go watch his dismissals in the last Shield game and come back to me.

Gonna be hard to find. Everyone's going to look bad when getting out. I take it you think not?
It’s there for everyone to see on the CA App just click on the game go to Scorecard and play through dismissal

He’s got potential in white ball cricket. Hopefully he can make the next step in that area, whatever that is.

From a Test standpoint he has zero appeal. Sadly there’s way too many of his cohort.
