Reminds me somewhat of Andy Bichel. Not sure he will feature in our next gen Test attack tho with Bartlett, Morris, Haskett, Beardman, Anderson all ahead of him. He is in the next tier tho with Aidan O'Connor, Louis Smith. Others may add their best young pace men.

I have Vidler potential above all them.

Good match from Campbell Kellaway by the looks of things. 79 & 77 while opening is quite good, he had 117* in the Marsh cup a couple weeks ago too.
Unpopular opinion but it was an ugly 77 in the second innings. Only positive would be he stuck phat and got through it to set up a reasonable score

Appreciate the insights, I didn't watch much of it. But as you say, an ugly 77 is definitely better than an ugly 20. I'd argue not enough of our young batsmen have shown the ability to score when things aren't going their way.

ive tuned in a little recently and he always seems to be battling. When you look at Harry Dixon who has taken to Shield cricket like a duck to water and now Blake McDonald (Blake is 27 and come from the strong NSW grade system)

Tuned in to watch some of the Vic second XI today. What a shambles that ended up being. David Moody had 5/8 early but a battling counter attack from number 8 Tom Rogers (104 from 193) and an exception 89 from 141 by number 10 Zac Beveridge saw ACT lift the score from 8/100 to all out 282.

Moody with 6, McClure 1, Warren with a bowled in the middle of the innings and Brodie Symons taken the last two wickets.

Really looking forward to seeing the firepower of this Vic second XI. Chandrasinghe is due, Brasher hasn't hit the heights of last year. Lemire is boom or bust and batting prodigy Ollie Peake is on watch imho. Tom Rogers is also in the squad so expect him to bully the underwhelming ACT bowling line up

Most of his innings are rather ugly and opposite to a Glenn Maxwell innings.
But is only young still and continues to improve and hopefully turn out to be a strong test opener

Harry Dixon from Victoria?
Only 20 played a few games for Victoria late last season and played a few decent knocks taking attacks apart

Looked comfortable at the level from the start (from what I saw) a few minor technical issues to work through but looks like he has a game that can translate to higher levels

He looks comfortable already and some innings he dominated the attack. The innings he played in the final game of the season for the vics he almost turned the game around.

He seems to either get a start for a 60 odd or gets out early. Either way he is probably best to move to nsw or sa where they seem to be able to develop batsmen far better then the vics do

However the Ashes finishes up, we're heading towards a transition phase.

36 Khawaja
36 Warner
35 Lyon
34 Smith
33 Starc
32 Hazelwood
31 Carey
31 Marsh
30 Cummins

The cupboard seems fairly bare given that a number of those on the fringes of the current test XI are old-ish themselves:
36 Henriques
34 Boland
34 Maxwell
33 Neser
33 Burns
32 Handscomb
31 Maddinson
31 Abbott
30 Harris
30 Bancroft
30 Patterson
30 Turner

There seems to be fewer 21-25 year olds pushing for national honours than in the past. For whatever reason, it seems to take players a number of years to establish themselves in Shield ranks and to perform to a consistent enough level to warrant higher selection.

Cricket Australia has been aware of this for a while.

They tried to implement some age restrictions to State 2nd XI cricket a few years ago (certain numbers of players under 25 in each team) but it went down like a lead balloon and was removed swiftly.

At a CA conference for premier grade coaches they lectured about how national level players would often play 1st Grade Cricket by 14/15 years of age so urged them to fast-track their most talented players.

You look through the leading Shield batting and bowling figures and it tends to be the older guys dominating.

Why are there fewer young players emerging?

Who are the 21-25 year olds in the state systems who have a game that will translate to international test level? Marnus Labuschagne for one was plucked from first class ranks with a mid-30s average. Nathan Lyon another who was something of a rough diamond identified.

2 years on and we still have 7 of that top bunch in the XI.

Seems a good time to bump this up and work out the best batting lineup(s) for the next WTC cycle.

Top 10 batting aggregate:
J Weatherald (TAS) 10- 906 - 186 -@50.33
HWR Cartwright (WA) 10 - 861- 171* @57.40
KR Patterson (NSW) 8 -743 - 167* @57.15
C Kellaway (VIC) 10- 738-165* @41.00
PSP Handscomb (VIC) 10- 693- 129 @38.5
HJ Hunt (SOA) -10- 676- 136 @33.80
TP Ward (TAS) 7- 665- 142 @51.15
SJ Konstas (NSW) 9 - 652- 152 @ 40.75
AT Carey (SOA) 4- 612 -123* @87.42
JS Lehmann (SOA) 9- 640- 130* @42.66

When calculated runs per matches. Carey, Ward, Patterson seeming to take the top spots.
Special mention:
JP Inglis (WA) 3 - 363 - 122 @72.60 JJS Sangha (SOA) 5 - 573 – 151 @71.62,

Starting here

Top order
Konstas ✅
I would be tempted to give McSweeney another trial, but batting at 3-4 where he is used to playing.

Middle order
Carey and Inglis would be definites
I would have Green and Webster, but could see the benefit of trialling some others like Ward.

Smith if he is available, might force Head or Inglis up to opening.
And I suppose if you have Inglis, you could squeeze Carey out at some stage to get both Green and Webster in.

Carey is legitimately our third best test/FC batsman over the last 1-2 years. Zero chance he gets dropped.

There's no obvious solution staring us in the face regarding our top 3 in the short & medium term.

This type of decision / transition is where coaches and selectors earn their keep.

They'll need to anoint certain players, identify players, back in options - based purely on their judgement. The stats won't give them the answer because no one is putting the results on the board.

Who are the relatively unknown players who may not have great Shield records who they believe have the game to succeed at test level? We've succeeded previously with some bold, intuitive calls (Healy, Warne, McGrath, Lyon, Labuschagne). Need to nail some crystal ball gazing picks now.

Jack Clayton imo. Has all the tools imo, can be a bit of a nervy started but can't fault him technique wise.

Not convinced his technique will hold up at the next level or other reasons?

His second half of the shield season was really strong after they moved him to opening the batting.
Option 1 - I need to see more away from the Junction
