Yep, and there is a fair bit of Schaudenfraude from non-NSW people in regards to the current predicament it's got itself in, but if they stepped back and looked at the bigger picture they'd realise that when Australia's most reliable generator of international cricketers finds itself in this sort of a rut, it's bad for Australian cricket.

100% at one state the NSW system is. Grade Cricket was so strong it was supplying 2.5 of the Shield Teams with players - the talent pathways system fails because bit lacks the tough grind of grade / premier cricket against hard heats - I’ll grant Covid didn’t help but by throwing away what was the best system in the world for a “vibe” is bordering on incompetence

Lachlan Hearne was let go by NSW cricket after 4 matches, small returns but he was only 18 or so at the time (65 or so on debut). Just saw he has made the move to Qld at the start of the season. Made a premier cricket double 100 among some other scores and was rewarded with a spot in the Qld 2nd XI side this week where he made 82 and 134. Wonder if NSW will rue that decision in the next year or 2 if he ends up with a Bulls contract next season.

Anyone who considers themselves an Australian supporter who takes any pleasure in the downfall of any state team has an IQ under 80. Especially the state that has 6 players in the current test team.

Another 100 for McSweeney today, incredibly consistent so far this season. Really is starting to look the goods, does tend to get out around the 40-60 mark a bit more than you'd like to see but he is heading in right direction. Good to see Hunt back in the runs too after a lean 18 months or so, even if it was at the expense of my bulls. Street looking good for his 47no so far, fingers crossed he can go on with it.

A couple of months ago I posted a "uncapped XI", which was more of a watch list for SS this season. I thought I'd check in to see how everyone was going...

1. Hearne
Currently playing premier cricket in QLD, playing pretty well there though. Will likely be back playing FC next year but has a long way to go.

2. Hunt
Averaging under 30 in FC this season with a big outlier score of 162.

3. Wyllie
Started the season very well with a 94, but averaged 10 after that in 7 innings and got dropped from the WA team.

4. Kellaway
Averaging 27 for VIC this season. High score of 51, but has crossed 30 in 4/7 innings. Just can't seem to cash in.

5. Hardie
Averaging 46 for WA, looked decent with the ball too. Is now playing for Australia in the T20s.

6. Gilkes (WK)
Averaging 22 for NSW. High-score of 57. Not sure how his keeping has been as the only NSW game I've watched most of this season was against VIC and he looked pretty good there.

7. Sutherland
Averaging 17 with the bat and 27 with the ball. High-score of 66 and has looked quick with ball in hand.

8. Perry
Averaging 37 with the ball, looked really good against NZ A but hasn't carried that form in the SS. Been decent with the bat.

9. Bartlett
Hasn't been playing. Injured.

10. Sangha
Only been playing LOI. With Australia in India for T20s.

11. Morris
Looked good in FC this season, averaging 26 with the ball. Could possibly get his first cap this summer.

Overall this makes for very dire reading. Especially the batting stocks. Still have very high hopes for Wyllie and Kellaway but can't deny that they've been disappointing.

Kellaway started at 3 and that really didn't suit him, since moving back into the middle order he's been much better and was vital in the first dig today. Gilkes is probably the worst of the uncapped keepers keeping wise and probably should be dropped for Holt next game. Perry is batting well but bowling too short for me.

Two players not named in that list worth mentioning are Fraser-McGurk who has just scored his first FC ton but is still probably a white ball player. Lawrence Neil-Smith has just taken 7fer against NSW which was well deserved after a strong start to the season.

Yeah true, although another example of Kellaway unable to convert a start into a big score.

If he threw it away I'd agree but he was one of two that didn't get themselves out (along with Dean). Harris wafted at a wide one, Puck and Handscomb followed the ball, Sutherland played with hard hands. Not as black and white as you'd think.

That's fair. Like I said, I have very high hopes for him. I'd love to see him get his first ton before the end of the season.

Olive Davies will be on this list by the end of the season. More suited to short form cricket, ala JFM but a big watch on the 23 year

Great shout, hopefully his unbelievable shield form makes him focus on red-ball. Just turned 23 so still tons of time to re-specialise. It's a shame all of our batting talent coming through seem to be middle order. Would be great if Marnus could move into one of the openers slots within the next 4-5 years (or even this summer).

Add Mcsweeney to the list. Looks the goods, shame he ran himself out yesterday.

Hearne will probably get a game or 2 after the BBL for Qld to get a look at him before they start doing the contract thing for next season. Made a 134 and 82 in his only 2nd XI match for Qld so far.

Going to bed in the UK and boy would it be nice to wake up and see Green and Pucovski have piled on some runs today.

Could see a Warner type transition from him.

What I liked about Warner early was while sure he was an out and out attacker it looked like he did it from a decent enough technique and played normal looking cricket shots so I believed eventually a test transition was possible. I see similar from Davies, is technique looks decent and his strokes look very good and transitionable imo. Not sure about his defence and batting longer times but Warner played a fair amount of test cricket before trying to bat like a proper opener - which imo is also around the time his form dropped away.

They need to make these Shield Pitches abit more batsmen friendly, not to the extent they were in the early 2000's where they were flat as all crap but just enough how our key men can get some time in the middle.

Agreed, I remember Hussey mentioning during commentary a few years back that he felt a lot of shield pitches were holding back development because the decks were so hard to bat on that batsman were essentially just sitting ducks until they inevitably got an unplayable ball with their name on it (Early season Gabba and Bellerive have been examples of that in the last 10 years or so, plus The WACA at the start of last season). He was basically arguing that a batsman learning how to craft a long innings on a decent batting deck was equally as important as trying to put together a semi-long innings in different types of conditions. It really is ignored how flat shield decks were in the late 90's and early 2000's when "the golden period" is discussed.

No BBL hiatus…

It's a natural extension of the Shield rule changes.

No 1st innings points anymore. States understand that you have to take 20 wickets to be any chance so pitches are being prepared accordingly.

It's made for more entertaining games but is it producing better cricketers?

Think all curators are trying to get pitches offering something for bats and bowlers. Even with drop ins, the early start we have to the Shield , means there is less time for the pitches to settle. Add in ratty Spring weather and it is fun times for bowlers.

Shield batting seems to improve in Feb.
