Tanveer Sangha looks to be a spin option for the future (still very young and has already played international ODIs and T20s).

Chandrasinghe is still only 22, and definitely has the temperament for test cricket, but still has a lot to learn which is perfectly understandable at his age.

Jason Sangha looked hugely promising a few years ago but has regressed big time. Still has time, mind you, hopefully the move to SA can rejuvenate him. Hasn't played Shield this season, but has made a good start in Premier Cricket so should break into the side soon.

Harikrat Bajwa is only 20, and has a lot of talent, so he's another one to watch.

I can't think of too many others. There was the ambidextrous all-rounder who represented Aus in the U19 WC a couple of years ago, but I'm not sure where he's sitting at (I think he moved to Tassie?)

Well, yeah, like I said, there's a lot he needs to learn and won't be a realistic option until he fixes his deficiencies.

I'm not going to completely write him off from ever making it though.
 
Good to see little Davy Warner helping sink Bancroft's career a second time.

P.s. Bancroft wouldn't get a game even if little Davy said nothing. Twisting the knife just makes him look like a campaigner again.

has the world test championship changed the landscape for selecting new talent? we seem to have always been a bit reluctant to blood new players even in dead rubbers, and with those dead rubbers being crucial to placings on the wtc ladder maybe we're even less likely to see someone 'given a go' randomly at the end of a series.

I don't think it changes anything. Australia will always select the best available, unless the best available is utter dross - think our AI generated spinner era between Warne-Lyon.

off the top of my head, macgill/hogg who then retired from tests. then mostly hauritz, who would have serviceable enough if lyon never came along. with beer/doherty/mcgain crapshoots.
extra spinners tend to get a look in on the subcontinent which is i guess a good place to throw them in when the pitch is to their advantage alongside someone more established. dan cullen et al.

probably has some merit to it.

soft test caps shouldn't be handed out in any case - fringe players etc get exposed through white ball cricket in most cases anyways.

it'll be interesting to see how many players in the future retire at the end of a WTC cycle (as its the equivalent to the end of an AFL season in a sense) and similar to the end of a world cup cycle.

most aussies love to always try to get to the 'next' ashes series for some reason and sometimes just a bridge too far.

Lots of change to the bowlers over the next couple of years.

O'Neill with 85 @ 19.8 putting together a good case to get opportunities in future tours.

A lot of the other good recent performers at Shield level will be approaching or older than 30 in a couple years time. Richardson, Bell, McAndrew etc.

On this theme I would be moving beyond Boland (36 in April) and Neser (35 in March) as the backups very quickly.

Really good player. Not quick enough for tests unfortunately in my eyes. Could maybe contribute in England.

Not if England continue on the Bazball route, pitches are flat there and the dukes haven't done as much as they used to in the last 3 or 4 years. Shield pitches are harder to bat on than county pitches now.

easy on cummo - he'll be 32 - but good point.

this is why i think boland and neser may well have played their last tests.
i did say this after the last ashes tour and they haven't played since.

boland may get a gig if they rotate/rest the big 3 at some point this summer and appears they won't look at neser this summer because of his injury.

with sri lanka and west indies tours coming up and possibly playing an extra spinner, opportunities will be limited.

Good point. But I'd expect a reversion to the mean at some stage in the future.

From memory he had been opening for Tasmania 2nd Xi at times the last 2 or 3 seasons. Had made a few 100's here that I had noticed, not sure about his bowling though

Richardson, Johnson and Morris could all play now. Richardson averages 22 from his 3 Tests and bowled extremely well last night. Morris and Johnson are going well too this current state game. Have to phase them in soon so it is gradual and not all at once

Back in the shield team made 55 in the first innings.

I'm mildly shocked that Boland has been retained as the reserve bowler.

Age is one part, but I thought he'd been somewhat exposed as below the level by England last he played. His story was immense when he joined the team, but that was such a purple patch so far above his career output, and he's reverted back to being the solid shield level bowler he always has been that's a step below test level. At 35 I though he would've been moved on from last summer tbh.

I have little faith in Jhye making it through a test, let alone a series. His shoulder is held together with papier mache at this point.
