Hugh Weibgen has been playing for Sunbury in the Surrey League over the winter. Currently on top of the run scorer list in what is considered to be the best league level comp in England. 3 150+ scores, a 112 and 4 50's so far. 1084 runs at 73. Made a 100 against a bowling attack featuring Gus Atkinson the other week so hasn't been batting against total mugs. Good signs heading in to our Summer, hopefully won't be long before we see him playing for Qld

Always appreciate updates on players in matches that aren't logged on cricinfo 🙏

He is one of the stars for the u19 team that I have been interested in, as I love the way he watches the ball. Just seems like a dependable type who will score runs in test cricket.

Between him, Peake and Dixon we hopefully have some exciting talent that can come into the Aus squad in the next 5 years or so.

Peake looked so classy against Sri Lanka, was unlucky he didn’t ton up as well.

Take note CA, Australia has a ready made future Asian tourist imho, Aussie A skipper Jason Sangha, who yesterday posted a double century in the unofficial Test in Darwin and looked more composed than I ever saw from him during his Blues career. He has always been a good stroke maker to pace but surprised me how he made it look all too easy facing the Sri Lankan spinners. Only other Aussie international I can think of that does the same is Steven Smith. I was specially impressed by Sangha's almost perfect front foot defense, with firstly sharp footwork to get to the pitch, then eyes over the ball and an angled bat to smother the turn. Copybook. In the past we Aussies have floundered in Asia because we allow their spinners to dominate due to our lack of technique and inability to problem solve. Like Smith, Sangha too can problem solve by turning the pressure back onto the bowler. In fact, I doubt there is anyone presently in First Class cricket that comes close to his spin play ability, perhaps only Josh Philippe.
Is the kid drowned by self expectation when thrown into first class cricket at a tender 18 yrs, about to finally realize his sizeable potential at a mature 25.

The Lancashire League has been an overseas nursery for some of Australias greatest cricketers, Ricky Ponting, Steve Waugh, Shane Warne and Adam Gilchrist all cut their English teeth there as overseas pros. In recent years Tim Ward, Mitchell Owen, Bryce Street played as overseas pros in the league, but I now see that there is not one Aussie pro playing this year and only Owen played in '24. In fact there appears to be less overseas pros from other nations too, indicative of a growing ECB policy of limiting overseas pros from playing in England in their off season. This is kinda sad.

As a bit if a cricket nuffie over many decades, gotta shout out this crop of exciting next genners, bat and ball, that have come thru our pathways and now stand on the threshold of a probable Test career. These 20/21 yr olds were unknowns a couple of years ago before they announced themselves in a big way as winners of the U19 WC and U19 Junior Ashes. Names like the afore mentioned Hugh Weignen, Harry Dixon, Mahli Beardman, Charlie Anderson, Callum Vidler, Joel Davies, Raf MacMillan and Sam Konstas of course, probably others I have missed too. Then there are the pick of the crop 17-20 kids presently in our pathways, Ollie Peak, Aidan O'Connor, Louis Smith, Simon Budge, Riley Kingsell, Lincoln Hobbs, Addison Sheriff, Steven Hogan. To name only a handful. All I can say is Aussie cricket looks in good hands for the next generation plus.

Great post

Many before this as well in the 50's and 60's. Australian, West Indian & India players.

Ian Chappell, who went at 18 years old said it was a good standard of cricket. Assume it is still ok?

Neil Hawke, Terry Jenner and the great DK in '71. Garfield Sobers one of the all time greats too in '72.

When the kids come out to play. An Aussie U19 side will host India A in dual home Youth Tests in September/October, the reciprocal one to the Aussie tour last year. Our boys will be out for revenge this time if we produce typical fast bouncy Aussie tracks. Tests to be played at Ian Healy Oval, Brisbane, the other at Mackay's Great Barrier Reef Arena. The tour also includes three pointless 50 over games. Why not T20s too.

Hearing on the grapevine an Aussie A squad is heading to India for a dual format series. Philippe, Konstas, Dixon, Bartlett, O'Neil are some named mentioned to make the trip. No mention of Jason Sangha who Ricky Ponting wants in our Test side.

Update: The squad has now been chosen but zilch on CA website and the tabloids carrying the story are all behind a paywall.

Another 100 overnight for Hughy overnight. Just under 1200 runs for the season across all formats

That is so impressive. How many are red ball tons, as in my eyes is the only format that signifies a readiness for Test cricket.

From here: https://sunbury.play-cricket.com/Matches

As far as I can tell, he has had 7 red ball innings, and 2 tons + 2 50s. That is only counting time-matches in the First Division (That is what I am guessing is red-ball, toml maybe you know better). Averages out to 53.86, facing about 67 balls per innings. Really good stuff

Not sold on Connolly for red ball. Quite a quick rise for Oliver Peake. No Jason Sangha, as he'd have been a weapon against the Indian spin. Has he been penciled in for the Ashes?

AUSTRALIA A ONE-DAY SQUAD

Cooper Connolly, Harry Dixon, Jack Edwards, Sam Elliott, Jake Fraser-McGurk, Aaron Hardie, Mackenzie Harvey, Todd Murphy, Tanveer Sangha, Liam Scott, Lachlan Shaw, Tom Straker, Will Sutherland, Callum Vidler.

Needed to split this portion of the tour with T20. Young Blues rookie batsman Shaw is a surprise. Yet another chance for JFM while it seems Tom Straker has the jump on Mahli Beardman and Charlie Anderson among the next gen attack. Imho he lacks the class of that pair.
Beardman has a stress fracture in his back

Squads named for the Aus A tour of India next month

No Jason Sangha, as he'd have been a weapon against Indian spin. Josh Philippe will tame the spinners tho in his place. Has Sangha been penciled in for the Ashes.
Not sold on Connolly for red ball, prefer Dixon then he and Konstas could have resumed the opening combo they forged when the Aussies smashed the Poms on their soil in the '23 Junior Ashes (U19s). No shocks about this quick rise by Oliver Peake given his ton in second Youth Test of U19 tour to the sub continent in '24.

Bummer. He had been upgraded to the top WA squad too. Hope he doesnt go the injury way of Pat Cummins, both young tearaways with similar actions.

Does anyone know what Cal Vidler has been up to since the end of the shield season. I am happy to see him named in the one-day squad. Just curious if hes been playing elsewhere or taking some time off.

Six I chose a week ago, all toured India last yr. I bombed out with Ranaldo and Hobbs. Not heard of most of the other kids so will have to do some research on them.

Alex-Lee Young, Yash Deshmukh, John James, Will Byrom, Kasey Barton are all Basil Sellers scholars for 25/26. Steve Smith, Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins are past scholars.
