After losing the top four for 50 our U19s were never going to give them much to chase, but thanks again to Alex Lee-Young who top scored in both innings, we battled, leaving India with a paultry 82 to win. Early wickets are needed and we have two but at 4/5 runs an over, far too many to be giving them for even the remotest chance of victory. These kids need to learn how to sacrifice pace in order to build pressure in these clutch situations of a match.

Watched a fair bit of both Salzmann’s innings and he was very good. Looks to have a beautiful technique, hits down the ground very well. One to keep an eye on.

Interesting, thanks. He is characterised as a bowling allrounder on cricInfo, but only got the 1 over. Do you think he has scope to move up the order? Or is 7 his natural spot?

The way he played he could easily move up the order. Probably in front of Davies and Green. Maybe they experiment with it seeing as the bowling stocks look pretty handy this year.

He came through the Aus under 19 side predominantly as a bowler, although he did bat 7 for them at times. Also has already taken 16 wickets at 17 from his 7 List A games for NSW. I hadn't heard much of his batting until recently when he made a 100 in one of the Pre-Season NSW City vs Country practice matches. Must have always been a handy batsman at the very least to be doing what he has done lately.

Good stuff, thanks gents. Seems to be a serious talent, I am surprised I hasn't heard that much buzz about him but maybe I just missed it. Could be because we're so set for all-rounders at the moment in the test team. Definitely one to watch for the remainder of the season then.

Agree. Davies is even lucky to still be picked. I watch a fair bit of Premier cricket in all states and there are more consistent middle order bats from Sydney clubs just itching for a crack at first class cricket. Then again, Lachlan Shaw has finally been promoted from rookies after three yrs, could slot into Davies spot. Blues selectors have to be the worst in using youth so I dont expect young guys like Charlie Anderson, Riley Kingsell, Alex Lee-Young or Addison Sherriff to be given a rookie contract anytime soon. Anderson and Kingsell should've gotten one this season.

Yeah I think Davies has the tickets for now but he looks like he could drop off imo.

Oh yeh, solid technique but is not a stonewaller, prefers taking on the bowling. Impressed me first time I saw him.

Heres a kid that knows how to target the stumps. Two years after this school match he was bowling against the Poms in the Aussie leg of the Junior Ashes (U19).

Jack Clayton will be the player by the end of the shield season that will have people talking. No weaknesses except his own brain early in his innings like Smarsh used to be. Glad he's a Qlder so he can just go about his work without every journo trying to force his name down selectors throats like the Vic and NSW journalists.

Clayton is not far off 27, so hardly a next gen. Has only played 34 FC games. 5 tons and he does have a decent conversion rate.

From a potential future Australian player he is still next gen, you dont need to be a 17 year old pathways prodigy to be discussed in here. Also worth mentioning that as far as his development goes he's probably the equivalent of any other 23 or 24 year old playing, he didn't play any cricket between the age of 18 and 21 as he was in the Brisbane Lions academy

A few of you may have seen Harjas Singh who scored the triple in first grade a week ago is now into the NSW 2nd XI. I don't hate it. He does a lot of things right when he chooses to hit long. Still head, hits through it, decent footwork. Contrasts hugely with certain other "attacking" players.

The thing with Harjas is he scored two or three hundreds in the longer form last year, all at pretty quick speed (close to 100 strike rate). From memory though, his other scores were under 20 usually.

Not sure where he has been most prolific but his home ground, Pratten Park, where he scored 300, is not a small ground.

For those who like this type of thing, he plays for Wests, the same club as Michael Clarke, Phil Hughes, Alan Davidson, and Bob Simpson (who I think has a stand named after him).

Can you be as inconsistent as Hunt is and be said to have good temperament? Temperament seems to have evolved to mean bat really slowly which I don't think this current Australia team needs more of.

I mean it can often mean that - not getting rattled by your limitations to churn out scores. I agree with you this team does not need another bat who strikes in the 40s.

No Jason Sangha, as he'd have been a weapon against Indian spin. Josh Philippe will tame the spinners tho in his place. Has Sangha been penciled in for the Ashes.
Not sold on Connolly for red ball, prefer Dixon then he and Konstas could have resumed the opening combo they forged when the Aussies smashed the Poms on their soil in the '23 Junior Ashes (U19s). No shocks about this quick rise by Oliver Peake given his ton in second Youth Test of U19 tour to the sub continent in '24.

Needed to split the white ball portion of the tour with T20. Young Blues rookie batsman Lachlan Shaw is a surprise. Yet another chance for JFM while it seems Tom Straker has the jump on Mahli Beardman and Charlie Anderson among the next gen attack. Imho he lacks the class of that pair.

Beardman and it seems Anderson not considered due to injury. Also, Straker played 5 shield games and 3 one day domestric games compared to Anderson only playing 2 or 3 one dayers last season. It seems logical he has the jump on Anderson at this stage and if you have watched them both, Straker looks a good 10km/hr quicker than Anderson. Time will tell with the youngsters. Straker looks to have started well in the onde day comp with 5 wickets in 2 games, as did Beardman with a 3fa in his one game. Hopefully Anderson is back to full fitness soon and gets some games for NSW. Such a shame about Vidler injuring his back but he will be back bigger and stronger and faster. Another young kid from WA has been going well, althought the carry on after getting Konstas was just weird.

Pace aint everything newbie. Anderson has the makeup of an emerging specialist seamer imho. With Hazlewood closing on retirement Aussie cricket needs someone in their attack that uses nagging line and length that builds pressure to get their wickets. My money is on Anderson.

Straker has the jump on Anderson not only because he is staying injury free but for having the luck of being chosen in first class cricket well ahead of Anderson who has only now finally been handed a rookie contract, due to our visionless selectors. Probably the main reason Straker rejected them and looked interstate to follow a career.

We seem to be one of the only sides who don't see any benefit in the shorter quicks with a skiddier action. I guess Jhye Richardson was in the frame having genuine pace at well under 6' but it's a career lost to injury unfortunately.

Putting Copeland in that category with Sayers and O'Neil as all are similar pace. Neser quite a bit quicker. For mine Sayers and Copeland should have gotten an England Ashes tour, so should O'Neil. But he wont as the present record breaking trumvirate will still be playing in their wheelchairs if selectors have their way.

I think Vidler fits that category. May be the exception to the rule.
