We think this is bad now?

Within five years, Indian and investors will own teams in the IPL, the Hundred and maybe even the BBL, and players will be signed to exclusivity deals that will mean they won't play for their country at all.

We can say they shouldn't, but when $10m+ is on the table, the local cricket authorities won't be able to compete.

We've seen it in multiple other sports, so it's probably just a matter of time.

Can you give me an example of this happening to a sport that's foundations are in country v country competition?

Can't think of any myself, but would be keen to see a case study...

the ICC will need to have rules similar to UEFA - clubs can't block players playing for their country.

The tri series was the highlight of the summer in the 80’s/90’s getting rid of it was a big mistake imo
They killed the goose that laid the Golden Egg

You might recall that "meaningless one day series" was something cricket fans bemoaned increasingly through the 90s on 00s.

Every test series had one tacked on. Games and series plonked in the middle of nowhere. Money spinners. Winter games vs Pakistan at Docklands. Then off to Sharjah for... something.

Games lost meaning. Format grew stale. Crowds fell, viewership fell.

Probably a lesson there for T20 cricket that I'm sure won't be heeded. At least CA scaled back the BBL (to a degree) after expanding the schedule for a season or two.

Cricket?

Kerry Packer era

Not a stretch to see a similar war being fought down the track between T20 comps/franchises and the ICC/national bodies

If you look outside our country, it's already happening. Professional cricketers from New Zealand and the West Indies are already in the position of needing to prioritise club commitments over national ones, and that's before the major influx of ownership money comes in

Kellaway particularly impressive against the leg spinner last night, Clarke and Rogers didn't really know which way it was turning but Kellaway was pretty decisive in either coming forward and smothering it or going right back and playing it off the surface.

He is looking like our best option moving forward for that opening spot. Good technique and temperament

Best part of the BBL is watching the next generation of superstars.

That’s all of Kelleway, Peake, Connolly and Weibgen that have looked awesome.
There's a few young bowlers warming the benches right now that I'd love to see get a crack like the younger batsman are. Really hope we see Oliver Patterson get a game for the Heat, reminds me a bit of a young Joel Paris, quick enough and absolutely hoops it. Having a great premier cricket season in Brisbane so far this season.

Will Sam Konstas' troubles mean that the timeline for Kellaway and Peake gets pushed back?

The selectors are obviously aware that the squad is old (so are the next up replacements) and needs fresh blood at some stage.

So Konstas was fast-tracked

In hindsight it was too early. Needed some more runs behind him and to have his technique tested more before being thrown into test cricket. Not to mention how hard it must be for a youngster to handle the media scrutiny international cricket brings.

Will the selectors wait a bit longer with our next two up and comers? Let them bank a few more Shield seasons?
