Absolutely it is! Stoked for him, just selfishly wish it wasn't happening haha.

Totally agree

In just this seasons small sample size we’ve seen from Peake what many of us were hoping to see from JFM who hasn’t exactly put it together on a regular enough basis

Kellaway looks really good to me. I would be in favour of opening with him and Head. Peake could easily feature next summer and I also like Hugh Weibgen.
Agree all 3 look promising.
In terms of quick bowlers it's frustrating Johnson is continuously injured. He'd be the perfect Starc replacement.

Big Spencer is a bit older than we think too. At 30 he will need to get his body right quick smart.

With Bethell doing well, do we perhaps go away from waiting for players to dominate Shield cricket with bumper seasons?

Pick a player or players who we just think have a test standard game that will translate?

Typically if Shield results are the defining criteria you end up with 30+ years olds debuting
We did just absolutely thrash them.

Good to see Bethell got some runs in the end, but not sure that should take us away from a structured plan for succession. Playing Webster seemed to work.

Peake v JFM

Chalk v Cheese - no comparison

Yeah Peake seems very much like a classical batsman....can go the T20 tonk if he has to, but has a solid technique for long form cricket.

JFM has never ever struck me as anything other than a dead set slogger.

Peake's doesn't need runs to be selected. That's elite.

Peake certainly looks the goods technique wise, it’s obvious he’s got the talent but not the runs on the board yet. I would still be pushing him up the top of the list for the rejuvenation plan.

Agreed, JFM is just horrible. He’ll be lucky if he’s getting Big Bash games soon.

I remember when a certain person said letting JFM go was the worst thing Victoria ever did

Have noticed over the past two yrs a trend has emerged with more promising specialist spinners, such as Joel Davies, Raf MacMillan, Ethan Jamieson, Cameron Frendo, Zed Hollick plus a couple of 18yr olds, Aryan Sharma and Will Malaczuc (s) in the just picked Aussie U19 WC squad, all being adept with the willow. Perhaps this is due to their junior coaches insisting they contribute with the bat or the player themselves wanting to add batting to their skill set to enhance their chances of selection in a dog eat dog world for spinners.

Anyone else think Tim Ward is worth a look? I know he's been middling about in Shield cricket for awhile now, but he looks very compact with good a temperament.
Has averaged in the mid 40s in his last 13 matches batting #3. Is this his ceiling, if so it is pretty bloody good. Is he Test class, reckon so for the reasons you have alluded to. Tho he has opened for most of his first class career I see him at #3 or preferably #4 long term, as he is certain to convert more in the middle order.

Mine too and I aint young anymore either. What he achieved between 14-18 then Ashes '19 was extraordinary and is what forged his legend. Gotta say tho his fidgeting at the crease and other odd antics over his career has driven me nuts, specially when he used to press his helmet to his scone ad infinitum. But I suppose we have to expect this from an accentric genius.
Thing about Smith is that even at his most devastating the public's never fully warmed to him, we've admired him and looked on awe at times but imo the best Australian batsman most of us has ever seen has never captured the public's imagination like other cricketers of similar stature have. To me he's always seemed slightly remote and that sometimes cricket is just a job that he happens to be incredibly good at which is not a criticism but most of us can be pretty emotional about the game and like to see that in our players too.

Anyone keeping track of the U17 championships on at the moment?

Matt Lough (WA) with 294 runs and then Blake Cattle (SA) with 280 the clear batting standouts

Jakey Pietz (15 wickets @ 12.2 the clear standout. Finn Vikionkorpi with 9 at 6.22 another leading bowler

QLD equal with NSW Metro, Vic Metro and NSW country round out the 4. WA and Vic Metro still in the hint for 4th with one game to come.

I have a close affiliation to the boy but keep an eye out for Sam Field from Vic Country. Won MPCA senior mens player of the campaign last year in the senior team, as a 16 year old. Kid looks a genuine star of the future. Bats well, bowls tidy offies. Took 4 in his first game. Think he could be a good shout as an underage shot for Aus U17s

Blake Cattle is NSW Country, not SA

Though I imagine we'll be scouting him haha

There was a "joke" a few years ago that the SA coaches at the U17s and U19s championships were only there to watch the opposition

Queensland have been pretty dominant. Any Qld'ers on here know their players at all?

The big guns from SA's U19 championship winning team who are also playing in the U17s haven't done much.

Best of the lot at this stage would be Brain, Bacalakis, Green and Tsingos imo. Those guys are getting pretty regular cracks in 1st Grade Premier Cricket. A fair few others in the squad getting the occasional go in the 1sts too though. Charlie Hara-Hinze has already played 29 T20i's for Japan, heads straight to the u19 WC to join up with the Japan team after today's match.

Looking forward to the next round of cost cutting from CA where these country squads pathways won't exist anymore (plus a mash-up team from Tasmania and the Territories). Just so short-sighted.
They're losing money hand over fist. What do you expect them to do?

I mean, hopefully NOT this, but they're in a hard spot if they keep losing money over the test summer.

Yeah. I can't see it working out sadly.
Beardman, Vidler and Anderson are exciting though.
Remove Anderson and insert Straker. Anderson with 0 FC games (same as Beardman who is yet to play a senior red ball game). Straker has played 9 FC games and Vidler 3.

Those three were far superior to Anderson at the U/19 world Cup and are also progressing at their state levels. Maybe Anderson isnt as mature in terms of development due to injury and will catch up.

I agree, Ward looks a good prospect. Averaging 40+ in Shield this season and at 27 probably reaching his best cricket years soon. One to keep an eye on for sure.

CA is throwing money at the womes game. Yes its a growth area, but how long can they continue to invest in this product if they are not making a return. If CA was flush with funds, then I think its great to be growing the womens game, however when they are reporting losses, perhaps it is time for the player payment pool for the womens game to be reviewed. What are your thoughts on this?

I'm not sold on Straker. I don't think he's better than a state league bowler in terms of potential. Thought the same at U19 WC.
