Sturt (SANFL) Football Club has granted Melbourne (AFL) request to approach current Head Coach Martin Mattner about the recent vacancy for its Head Coaching Position.

Sturt currently Top of the Ladder in the SANFL and reigning Premiers are undefeated in 28 straight games.

Well sounds like he would be a good prospect to interview.

Reigning premiers? Glenelg are the reigning premiers. Having said that, Marty Mattner is a fantastic coach obviously

Wow - when was the last time a coach jumped from a 4th-tier league to the top league? It's more likely Melbourne have the head coach stitched up and he is interviewing for a role at Casey or a development coach.

Sturt would destroy any VFL side!
Haha, good one.

The SANFL has a number of Victorians who move over because they can't make a VFL side. Nobody gets cut from SANFL and gets offered a contract in the VFL.

South Australians need to go watch some of the top local leagues in Victoria, they are probably equivalent of the mid-table SANFL teams.
These days the SANFL would probably be on par with the QAFL, which has improved a lot, and a massive leap behind the VFL. WAFL sits somewhere between the two, so yes - 4th tier, and fading.

You clearly haven't watched any QAFL. I regularly go between Qld and S.A, and have followed Redlands/Victoria Point closely for the past 15+ years. The worst team in the SANFL would beat a QAFL side by 20 goals minimum, and the QAFL side would seriously struggle to score. Guys come up to Qld out of country footy in SA or Vic and instantly stand out as very good players in the QAFL. I also watch a lot of VFL and Southport. There is not much of a gap between VFL and SANFL footy. And to the point you make, there also aren't any guys getting dropped from a VFL squad that are getting games in the SANFL. Ridiculous statement.

Southport however still stacks up very well in the VFL/East Coast league. Financial power house.

I’m enjoying that this has suddenly become another interstate rivalry thread
Hardly surprising, say anything less than positive about anything Victoria and they lose their minds.
If you ever find yourself bored, just fire a shot in that direction and you'll have hours of entertainment.

Given the committee has literally only just been set up and is only now reaching out to people they are keen to hear from, and asking people to express interest if they want to put their name forward - this is indeed an awesome rumour.

My old basketball coach from the 1980s could also be the guy to lead the Demons. We were a half decent team !

I like Port, big fan of Powell Pepper, Ken Hinkley, JHF, always liked Boak. They're the little Magpies, always had a soft spot for them.

The Crows play some awesome footy. A very real threat this year, and if the beat us they will hit the finals like a tidal wave.

Never understood the "Kick a Vic" mentality, I dislike Carlton and if you take a shot at them I'm joining in.

I dont really care too much about SA, aside from liking Pirt and laughing at a few passionate Crows.

Bevo coached St Bedes/Mentone Tigers to the C, B and A Grade premierships before he became Bulldogs coach, obviously not exactly the same but most similar that I can think of

But he was coaching at Hawthorn the 3 years before joining the Dogs. I'm sure you can find success outside the AFL with more than a few eventual coaches who started at the lower level before going on to a assistant role at AFL level.

I only take the piss, known plenty of good Vics in my time.
I respect your mob, love the passion.
Dont mind the Cats, even if they are the king of rorts they get bang for buck so you gotta appreciate that, but some of their supporters need to lighten up, its just footy.

Hawks and Dogs can gagf.

‘FTFY’

“Hawks, Dogs & Cats can gagf”.

The external football 'expert' on the panel;

Jobe Watson
(according to Melbourne)
Watson is a respected football-figure who captained the Essendon Football Club, playing 220 games across his career. A dual All-Australian, Watson has an elite football IQ and an intimate knowledge of the day-to-day operations of a football department.

Much discussion, in recent times, about the culture of the Melbourne Football Club.

So Melbourne think to themselves, who was the bloke who captained Essendon when 34 past and present players were suspended for taking 'supplements'?

He's someone we'd want to help select our next coach.

Weird dumb club.

Yeah, great point

I guess he's intimately familiar with what not to do. His coffee game is elite too. verbal communications, not so much.
