im throwing in one here a bit from left field, russell robertson. he has enormous respect at the club and others and the general football public. never do you see him sucked into fights, he stays calm and gets on with it as a true leader does.

there is a poll like this on the demons site but thats who you THINK will be the next captain not who you WANT.

i think that Yze will be looked passed as he will be 2 old when neitz retires giving him no real time as captain. Green or Bruce will probably get it but i reckon Russell would do a terrific job. thoughts?

well i would be happy to see Cameron Bruce and Brad Green getting Co-Captaincy to be honest.

Robbo to be VC would be a massive honour for the guy, as i am not quite sure he has what it takes as he tends to spit the dummy if things aren't working.

Bruce, Yze and Green aren't worthy of the captaincy right now to be honest. After watching Neitz battle his heart out tonight and showing pride in the MFC guernsey, there is no way these 3 guys should be allowed to follow in his footsteps. Yze will be too old and he has never struck me as captaincy material anyway. Green doesn't seem like the type of guy you want leading your club. Bruce has the potential, but for God's sake he must put his hand up and take some responsibility in our performances. He has to prove himself, because at the moment he isn't worthy. Travis Johnstone and Russell Robertson would probably be more worthy at the moment, but I doubt none of them will get it. I think Neitz will hold it for another year, and after that maybe Miller might be an option.

Even though they have loads and loads of talent, after watching them play over the last month, I never want to see Green or Bruce captaining the club. They don't have it in them. Both are soft in contests, and go completely missing when we need them most. Neitz showed them the way tonight with his attack on the footy. The club and it's players needed to respond. Neitz did. The rest of the senior players didn't. That's why Neitz is captain.

Wait at least another season, and Brad Miller might be ripe for the job. Hard at it, can impose himself, and has leadership written all over him. Either him or possibly Brock McLean, but the rest are showing absolutely nothing to warrant giving them the job.

Spot on cowboy, I was thinking the same thing.
Neitz should stay captain until he retires. Unlike green and bruce, he is willing to throw his body around. Hell, even the new guys in sylvia and mclean go in harder than bruce and green. I'm so p1ssed off atm at those two. When we needed them to stand up, when the going was (and still is) tough, they didnt, and they let the club down. Although there was another 15 odd players who didnt stand up either tonight, these are the guys we rely on, and they were truly sh1thouse.

My vote is neitz, maybe Miller or McLean next in line, but lets let them develop more first.

i think there are two possibilities to take the captaincy from neitz.

the first is miller. he is hard at the ball, always puts in 100% and wears his heart on his sleave. never backs down, is a team player and always backs his mates up.

the second is brent maloney. he is still young, and good hard player who is willing to go in and get the ball. runs in straight lines. has a bit of an aggressive streak, and is not afraid of confrontation.

either of these two would make a great captain in my oppinion. both lead by example and would be players capable of motivating the playing group.

I thought that today, he was fantastic, should be given the gig for two years, starting in 2006 and then assess whether McLean or Sylvia are ready.

A real tough one. I think Neitz should take a step backwards and concentrate on trying to lift his game. His goal kicking really is extremely inconsistant as is his form. For me, one of the senior group would be better, an insentive to lead more.

I'm not sure about Robbo. He's a great clubman, but I don't know about him being the leader of the side. I suppose if he got it for a year or two it would help because I don't think Miller, Moloney, McLean or Sylvia (They are the 4 players IMO who the next long term captain should be picked from) are ready yet, especially Sylvia and McLean.

I heard that one of the conditions Bruce signed his contract under was he would get the captaincy once Neitz retires, but I personally would like to see it go to Mclean, Sylvia or Miller.

Overcooks it a bit though. I like the idea of Miller or Moloney getting it sometime in the future but I dont think either of them will captain the team next. What about Rivers getting it? Very mature and gutsy

whelan? this guy owns the melb backline, with him out they dont know what to do, he coordinates it well and i rekon he has leadership.. if he increases his impact on the game then i rekon hes an outsider... still i think bruce or green will get it if they lift their game next yr...

If Miller isn't our next captain Brock McLean has to be the man.

I hope Miller's the man for the job.

No way Moloney is a unit and will captain Melbourne for sure. My moloney crew are on board and are with him all the way

I reckon that the future captaincy will be between Miller, Moloney, McLean and Sylvia. Unfortunately though, all are 2-3 years from the job IMO and if Neitz wished to hand the reigns over at the end this season or next, it is hard to see who would be the immediate replacement. Obviously much can happen development wise next year to these players but if he stood down at the end of this year who would get it?
Perhaps someone like Yze nearing the end of his career can get it as a interim til these guys mature a bit.
