Bugger me. When did this place get so damn precious? Nobody is saying Armo is a bad bloke. They're simply saying that, in the way he presented on TV, he was great, but Newnes was better.

Insert crazy guy defending Britney gif.

I agree, some people really do need to get a life.

Watch the videos of Newnes and Armo on the Saints app. Armo is making jokes that he's too dumb to pass concussion tests even when he hasn't had a concussion. It's funny, and endearing... But not what I would want a captain to say about themselves.

Armo is a great sergeant - a leader among the grunts - and that is a valuable and commendable role. But Maverick or Newnes are the steely types you go to war for.
Steven being overlooked still.

Has shown the biggest jump in maturity and that got backed by his inclusion in the leadership group.

I think as an interm skipper for a few years he could be great.

Groom newnes further until he masters his game or move onto hughy, Dunstan, Mav in 4 years time

Fair assumption, I put him in the Rockliff type of leader.

But again I'd be looking for an interm leader with hopefully roo still playing some role at the club

He just isn't the type and even though it would be a great achievement I don't think he would want it due to the pressure of being Captain. The players obviously didn't think he was suited as they didn't vote for him. The coaches must think he is a chance though.

i think (not in the know at all) geary's because of age is just more mature.. more a stay at home type. where as newnes is the opposite end of the spectrum and doesnt mind a beer or 4.. mav somewhere in the middle?
A big reason why I want Newnes as the next skipper is because he can hold down that role for a long long time. I just want some structure within the side, I don't know if it'd be the best thing to have Armo/Geary as captain for 2-3 years before passing the batton on to someone younger like Newnes. I'm just of the belief that captains of any club should hold the position for more than 5 years. Newnes will be 24 in February next year, I think it's the perfect time for him to test it out whilst Roo is still around (Roo will play on I reckon) and the fact he's in the leadership group already is a big plus.

I think it affects team balance/chemistry when a team keeps changing their captain. That's just me though.

When did Roo become captain? How old was he? Wasn't he only about 24 himself? Different guy, sure, but yeah.

Ideally I like the captain to be in the role for around 6 or so years. Agree that Armo and Steven are leaders in their own right when it comes to the field. However these days it's a as much in the media and the way you present yourself and the club.

My first preference would be Newnes with Weller a very very very close second. Geary unfortunately wouldn't doesn't have the media personality as Newnes and Weller and needs to just focus on his own performance.

Nick Riewoldt's first game as captain was Round 1 2005 vs Brisbane at the Gabba. Nick broke his collarbone diving for a mark just outside 50 on the boundary line and then was bumped after the injury by Mal Michael and Chris Scott. Aaron Hamill and Scott went at it all night long after that...Rooey was seen crying on the bench with his warmup jacket on after half time.

Not the greatest introduction into captaincy, but he was 22 at the time.

I can see Newnes demanding more form his players and having the team around him barking orders. Jack Steven seems like a happy relaxed dude and Armo seems like he's be cracking jokes and is a big larrikin. Jack Newness would be perfect in just about every aspect, I can't explain what it is he has but you get a strong sense of inner power and integrity with him. He is your perfect meet and greet guy and has a really strong sense of inner confidence and from pretty early on. I remember before we drafted him watching him on future stars have a goal kick-off with Peter Daicos, plenty of kids look nervous on that, he didn't blink and seemed like he was having a kick with an old mate. He has an old head on his shoulders. Geary is obviously a popular teammate but he doesn't appear to like the off field stuff. Weller I just reckon he needs to really cement himself as a player and VC would be well deserved but his performances are still a little hit and miss at times.

As I was reminded all night in his 300th by the Dogs supporters who were yelling "are you going to cry again Riewoldt" every time he shanked a kick or copped a bump. Feral idiots.

Well that's really poor.

Tex walker, brown and hodge all love a beer and it hasn't stopped them from being good/great leaders.

Driving home trolleyed, from a club function no less, would suggest otherwise.

I think Newnes is now the obvious choice...Armo would be have been a great option until one of the younger guys is ready but I think Newnesy will be cherry ripe for the top job come 2017.

Weller, Dunstan, Goddard & Paddy will be great support in leadership roles for the next generation too.

Aside from being Armo's adocate (may sway my judgement a little) I believe he'd make a great captain in 2017. It would seem a bit silly to bypass Armo though when he has worked his guts out and shown his capability through the tough last few years.

Having said that Newnes has really come on along with the surprize packet Mav Weller. To think Mav was thrown a rookie rescue spot and already being thought of as a future captain is testament to his relentless effort since coming to the club.
Both show the desire, commitment, tanacity and leadership needed for the role.

Reality is all 3 would be great.

I still don't know what it is Mav does for the team but whatever he does i always like it when he has the ball.

I reckon he's given a few Mr fixit roles like defending the rebounding run of the opposition's most mobile defender, he's a defensive forward but can swap up to rest a mid and have a run on ball. His role doesn't lend it's self to captaincy. Seems a great guy though and has good traits.

Does anyone else get the feeling that Mav is going to be our Hodgey (spiritual leader) and Newnes will be our Mitchell (a good captain but has a better one waiting in his wings)?

Those same blokes would turn to blubbering jelly if confronted by the man.

Im actually warming to the idea of Mav as a captain. Dont forget he was a super talented jnr. His issues at the Suns were around defensive work and how badly did he want this.

He has improved light years since then and I think he actually plays a very subtle game that teams dont really pay attention too.

If I was asked who should lead the team this week should Roo not play Id say Mav.
