NFL coming to the MCG in September 2026 - clash with AFL finals?

I went to the game in Arizona between LA and Minnesota the other week and my god it was the most boring sporting event I have ever attended.
I've liked NFL since I was a kid and enjoy it on TV, but live it is just torturous 10 seconds of play, stop, wait 2 minutes then start tedium.
Go to a game at Ford Field then get back to me

Personally I have no interest in American football but I really hope the AFL don't do too much caving to it. I assume the NFL will want their game on a weekend which may effect the timing of the AFL finals match or matches.
Game will likely be played Friday around midday in order to line up with the Thursday Night Football slot in America, and was rumoured to be in October.

Nothing to see here folks.

The MCG has held State of Origin rugby league, rugby union or soccer internationals then AFL games on 24-48 hour turnaround several times before. This won't be an issue.

So what have you been watching on TV. What happens at the stadium is happening on TV if you are watching it live. Never mind that the play clock is 40 seconds not 120 seconds.

The greatest sport on the land on Australia's best sporting ground (suffer in ya jocks GMHBA!).
The city of Geelong might have missed out this time, but please be assured that it will be first in line to be awarded the next NFL expansion franchise.

The good citizens of Geelong will also graciously forego any demands to play future finals at GMHBA, so that the Geelong Gerbils NFL team can have unrestricted access to its home field during its regular season.

Any sport is a different viewing experience on screen vs irl.
NFL lends itself well to TV with replays, play by play breakdowns etc, cos generally the thing that just happened in a flash was actually quite complicated.

Week of the pre final bye maybe?

Looking at the calendar the GF would be on the 26th to avoid an October GF, which means week 1 of the finals would be around the 3rd to the 6th. So the pre finals bye would be in August. Didn't think the NFL started their season that early? Someone with more NFL knowledge than me would bring more clarity to the situation

Maybe the NFL could have a round zero.

I do worry with the glowing praise coming from the NFL and state government, what the weakling Dillon has given up. He was probably star struck and got all awkward meeting a manager from the NFL. I heard it will be played Monday morning here so it beams back into the U.S. on Sunday night.

I reckon Dillon might have guaranteed no mcg finals on the Saturday or Sunday this year to give the mcg a reasonable turn around time.

This situation would have been a good opportunity to get back something to give our game some sort of promotion in the U.S. or the state government an opportunity to promote our game invented in Victoria, into the U.S. They didn't even do anything for our local game when promoting kabadi here through the deal with the Indian government though, so I doubt it.

We only promote other countries domestic sports here, we don't get anything in the deal to promote our own domestic sport back the other way, it's pretty poor really.

I get it's a likely once off thing but why would a week day, day game be beneficial to anyone?

If they are here to grow the game play it in prime time...If you're catering for American audiences then play in America

My understanding is this is a deal over multiple years. So potentially multiple years of fixture issues between the AFL and the NFL that may need negotiating.

As an AFL fan I just hope the AFL aren't negatively affected by the big yankee sport coming to town and having to make way for them.

Agree, there is surely no way this doesn't get played on the weekend, especially when Saturday midday lines up with Friday night in the USA.

Scheduling will be interesting - I'm sure the NFL will want a pristine and clean field for this - meaning this can only happen during the pre-finals bye or after the Grand Final. Maybe the AFL season is a week later (opening opening round or gather round 2 anyone?!).

You would think the bye week would be perfect. Maybe schedule minimum games at the G the last round.

I may be wrong (feel free to correct any NFL fans) but from my understanding Friday nights is essentially college football night in the states. They may not want to go against it
