So, the NFL match at the MCG is on Friday 11 September at 10.35am.

That's the weekend of Week 2 of the finals. Will be interesting to see how the 'G scrubs up in the aftermath.

AFL finals are affected in two ways because of this.

Firstly by the fact that the AFL will lose the primetime Friday night game as the MCG will be unavailable. If they decide play it at Marvel on Friday night it will almost certainly limit the crowd, so doubt the AFL will do that option, which means lower ratings as not played on Friday night.

Secondly there will be less recovery time for the winning team before the next weekend of finals.

Why do you assume a Victorian team will be the home team for that semi final? It could be in Adelaide, Perth, Gold Coast, Brisbane or Sydney. It could even be a Bulldogs or St Kilda hosted game, which would be fine to play at Marvel.

And if two Victorian finals would be on that weekend? Not ideal. St kilda got almost 70k for a week 1 finals game vs gws just a few years ago. Playing at Marvel is going to restrict the crowd severely.

Far more likely to play a 2nd Vic SF at Marvel than not have a Friday night game imo.

In that case, at most the potential crowd to one final is halved because of the MCC's preference to lock in a guaranteed big event.

This is exactly what the AFL does every year by booking concerts in late November at their own stadium, thereby accepting a Melbourne-hosted AFLW Grand Final is to be played at the severely undersized Ikon Park.
