Rookie NGA Academy prospects

Interest in Owens has dropped further now that he has embraced his culture as part of his training regime.

We were looking for a big bodied midfielder weren’t we?

Little write up by a Zero Hanger about NGA's and father/sons. Interestingly they seem to taste Windy higher out of the two.

They also say Leek Alleer is eligible to be picked up by Adelaide as a NGA. LOL.

Mitchito Owens (St Kilda NGA)
Height: 190cm
Weight: 85kg

The Saints' Academy player had a great year playing with the Sandringham Dragons and is set to go inside the top 30 in this year's proceedings.

A winger who has an eye for goal, Owens ramped up his performances in the final few games for Sandringham before COVID put a stop to the NAB Boys League for 2021.

With Owens likely to fall outside the top 20, St Kilda should be able to match a bid for the exciting AFL hopeful and bring him to Moorabbin should they desire.

Marcus Windhager (St Kilda NGA)
Height: 183cm
Weight: 82kg

Another Saints NGA prospect is Marcus Windhager who, like Owens, enjoyed a good season with the Dragons and is tipped to be selected around the fringes of the top 20.

Devastatingly, the explosive midfielder has suffered a back injury, which is set to mar his initial season at AFL level as the injury requires surgery.

The Saints will only be able to make a bid for him if he falls outside the top 20, however Windhager's injury history may have an influence on where he lands with an early-year knee reconstruction also having an effect on his 2021 campaign.

Other NGA prospects

Blayne O'Loughlin (Adelaide NGA)
Jack Peris (St Kilda NGA)
Angus McLennan (St Kilda NGA)

this is a few months old but still interesting

Interesting that the two boys the Saints have nominated from our NGA boys, besides the two we have been talking about all year, Owens and Windhager, are both indigenous boys from NT. Good we could do with a couple more. Those two being Peris and Kyle.
I love that Kyle has been nominated.
He may never play a game but to paraphrase Chris Martin: “He got style, he got grace”.
A real silky looking player by his highlights.

Where did you see highlights, Sunny?
Seem to recall something in Instagram but cannot locate.

Does anybody know what kids we have under development for future years? Or is this year a one-off?
If my memory is right we can almost forget about it after this year.
I'm not even sure if the club affiliations will continue, but as of next year only kids bid on after pick 40 will be eligible and you're looking at outside prospects at that point.
The AFL is just trying to unscramble the egg on this. It's like what the rules committee do each year by creating 2 new rules to try and fix the 1 bad rule they brought in the previous year. God forbid they just admit to the mistake and go back to what worked better in the first place..

this is essentially the last possible year we can get any real value out of the system. We can only match from pick 40 onwards after this year which is pretty grim. There's always hope a top end talent can slide out of the top 20 like Owens and Windhager but anyone worth any drama will be going far earlier than pick 40 in the future. If Owens gets taken it'll be a shame that our two most promising prospects had their draft year right after the rule change. Had this been last year it would have been stress free and we could have gotten both of them no fuss

Yep, reactive Gil, brought in all this academy stuff without really thinking about it.
It was only after last year's draft when the Bulldogs demonstrated how you could undeservedly ( based on zoning ) get the best player in the draft, trade the first round pick that "should" have been used for a top player, and get the number 1 pick with junk picks, that he realized what a monster he'd created.
So now he's phasing it back out.

We are hoping to do what the Dogs did, but in the second round.
But then again , we never have a 2nd round pick anyway.

Its not Gil, its *ing Steven Hocking.

It wouldn’t have been changed if Geelong had a few highly rated NGAs

Fantastic that we were able to nab four of these guys, especially the year before further changes. It feels like we haven't had much luck with father sons or NGAs so hopefully a few of these lads can make the grade or even go on to be elite, it might just be the bit of luck that propels us into the top four in the future.

If even ¾ of the NGA boys are in our premiership team we’ll get people saying the AFL gifted it to us
