Doesn't sound too serious. My favourite of the article is "He's our best runner, so it's not as if he's going to lose a lot of fitness."

I think the team was becoming too Fosdike-reliant anyway, so it might be good for the players to get a bit of experience without him. Then if the unthinkable happens and he gets injured in the regular season, the whole Swans season might not be a write-off.

It might be good for the rest of the team to share a bit of the bench-warming duties too, unless they let him still sit there out of habit.

Luv Humph.

If he'd not right for round 1 I would love to see someone like Veszpremi, D. O'Keefe, or Bird get a crack. The last guy to debut in Round 1 of a season and play pretty much every game was Schneider back in his debut season. Would love to see that happen again.

Out of those players the only one who could be in senior team round one is of course craig bird unless daniel o keefe has a awsome preseason we were rapping him this time last year
(not that is was on this site but i certainly thought it was a great pickup)

And paul beven played lots of games in 2004 in his first season

You are right, Bevan played 24 in '04 and Schneider played 24 in '03. What I should have said in my previous post is play alot of games and have a real impact. Schneider was sensational in his first year. He was so exciting and he kicked 30. Bevan on ther other hand was honest, as he always is I guess.

Damn shame about Fossie, very underrated player. I hope he gets back into full fitness and playing for us by round 1, but like another poster as mentioned, it would be great if Veszpremi, Bird or Danny O'Keefe gets a game and then play on to play in every game. Especially Danny O'Keefe. :D

I actually think this injury will help us in the long run if Fosdike has to sit 5-6 games. With LRT and Kennelly back to fitness and getting the likes of Mattner and Playfair, our squad is pretty crowded when everyone is fit.

Fosdike gets his hands on a lot of footy around the flanks, with him out, it really opens up a spot on the bench and giving the likes of Barlow, and maybe even Jack and Schmidt more touches on the footy when we are on the attack. Moore is another player that I think can benefit from this injury. One of the main criticisms I have of last year is that even when the youngsters gets games - eg. Jack, Schmidt, even Laidlaw - does not get enough touches while in attack and the ball is dominated by the senior members that haven't necessarily used the ball well at all.

Bevan was very good in his first season. He came 4th in the RS voting, winning some votes off pretty much every judge. Both Roos and Maxfield waxed lyrically about his season at the end of year dinner, in a way I don't think I've ever heard them talk about another young player.

as i was with mcveigh, i was a big fan of bevan's early on, and there's no doubt he's still a real hard nut and a great physical presence, unlike mcveigh
bevan's problem is that his skills have never developed and his decision-making, as shown several crucial times in 07, are lamentable

Sadly injuries happen at training sometimes, there is no recrimination on the club for this. It sounds like it could be worse but you don’t want to have players having an interrupted pre season. Fossie will probably have to be nursed back into routine over the first few rounds of the season to avoid the problem from flaring up later in the season. This will probably mean McVeigh will be given some of the rotation with Buchanan in the runners spot and I know how much many people here will feel about that.

let's hope the coach and selectors use a bit of imagination
why not try malch nearer the ball?
or even the egg, vez or DOK?
anyone but mcvague
...but you're probly right

To be honest, I'm not too keen on Malceski being on the ball, or even as first receiver off a clearance. Malceski has a poor injury record (when he was younger) and Kennelly was hurt for good when he was playing close to a stoppage last year. Malceski with his amazing kick, but very skinny legs - is a player that we really have to cotton wool, he's too important for us to be injured on the sidelines. I'll rather see him leading off the forward flank more often to see whether he can manufacture a few quick goals in patches.

If anything, I might throw Mattner in closer than a standard flanker position and see whether he can turn into a inside/outside threat like Buchanan in 2005 and 2006. Schmidt is another option. For me, speed is less crucial closer to the ball than evasive skills together with strength. Blokes closest to ball doesn't need to be quick, and even receivers like Hodge, Del Santo, Buckley etc are not particularly quick either -
they just use the ball really well (which Malceski does, but I really don't think his body type/injury record is good for an inside role). Obviously Judd is an exception, but he's a freak.

Moore's body type and skill set should also be useful in such a role, I think.

personally, i'd like to see malch given the chance closer to the ball, but i take your point, and we do have plenty of candidates to fill the midfield gaps
i'd love to see buchanan back to his best of 05-06, schmidt has shown good signs, moore seems to always be affected by injuries, although he looked good back when he made his senior debut in, geez, was it 04 or 05, and then we've got the new kids, DOK, vez, et al
maybe we could get the NY giants quarterback, eli manning, after seeing him duck and dive outa the way of about 47 patriot monsters in that last drive of the superbowl
