nice achievement

http://www.geocities.com/worldfootballrankings2004/index.html

Collingwood ranks in the top 50 football clubs with drawing power around the world.. ranked 48

baring in mind something like 30 out of the top 40 are american football teams. god i never knew they averaged such crowds. and for such a ********e sport?

Re: nice achievement

Perhaps if they also used factors like population comparisons and scaled those in. It is very well established that per population Aussie Rules football draws crowds like no other. If we had a population 20 times our current one we would also draw "bigger" crowds. Do you think that the crowd drawing potential of American Football includes the fools who sit in the car park and have BBQ'S?

The "fools" are only included if they have a ticket and enter the stadium. No one counts "crowd drawing potential" for American football games. They count paid attendances. The smallest of the NFL's 31 stadiums (2 NY teams presently share a stadium) holds a few more than 60,000 people. The largest holds 85,000. NFL games are sold out in many cities b4 season begins. And there is nothing like the smell of a stadium car park 1 to 2 hours b4 a game...it is unbelievable! When I was a kid I loved the smells at the MCG on a Saturday when I arrived to watch a Demon or Tiger game. (Had to have a four'n-twenty b4 I got a seat.) The NFL car parks are better!
The really huge crowds for American football come at some major collge games where there are some gigantic stadiums. Last year, 14 colleges averaged more than 80,000 people for each of their home games. Four teams averaged over 100,000 per game. The University of Michigan averaged almost 111,000 per game. The NFL would never play in stadiums this large because they like to charge top $$$ for their tickets. If there are too many seats, season tickets don't sell out as people will by tickets on a per game basis, avoiding crappy games.
And while it's not typical in US, some towns draw 15,000 for high school games. Odessa Texas (population 92,000) has a decent stadium (nicer than some of the suburban grounds in Melbourne) that holds about 20,000. Two high schools share this stadium and one of them fills it for almost every game. No BBQs in car park though!

You gotta take into account they only play 6 home games max in the NCCA football. And most the small towns that draw 20,000 are the only division 1 college within about 400-500kms. Also collingwood go up against 2 or 3 other games on a weekend. If melbourne had 1 or 2 teams they'd have no problem filling the MCG each weekend with still over 50,000 people missing out.
