MATURE-AGE speedster Nick Hind has bolted into calculations for a round one debut at St Kilda as coach Alan Richardson prepares for added flexibility in 2019.

Drafted out of Essendon's VFL side, the 24-year-old was one of four players plucked from state leagues in November as part of a targeted draft strategy designed to have immediate impact.

One of the standouts on the track in a skills session on Wednesday led by new assistant Brett Ratten, Hind enjoyed an extended chat with Richardson and Ratten after catching their eye.

"There was a bit of play that we really liked, he brought us back inside from a rebound, that's what that was about," Richardson told AFL.com.au as part of a day of exclusive behind-the-scenes access.

"That's what we recruited him for, a bit of speed and penetration."

An outstanding 41-disposal performance from Nick Hind has thrust the speedy half-back into the senior selection conversation following an impressive outing against Box Hill in the VFL.

Hind’s dynamic run off half-back and through the middle of the ground was a constant, as too were his penetrating kicks (27), strong marks (nine) and ability to weave through congestion to drive Sandringham forward.

Nick Hind
41 disposals, 27 kicks, nine marks, three tackles, one goal
“Hindy’s influence on the game from our rebound and ball-use point of view was great. He certainly gives us a fair bit of use off half-back and it looked like he had a lot of fun out there. Had 41 touches and gives us some real good speed.”

Nick Hind
20 disposals, 13 kicks, three tackles
“He was really solid, Hindy. I thought he got the balance right about when to attack, when to defend, and his communication and nous around the back six was really evident for us. He’s working really well for us at the moment and he’ll press for selection as a number of the boys will.”

30 disposals, 17 kicks, five marks
“Very much like Coff, they’re hard to keep down because of their speed and nous of the game, but I thought Hindy was solid for us down back. Racked up quite a bit of footy again, particularly in the last quarter, which was really pleasing for us.”

Nick Hind
20 disposals, 11 kicks, eight marks

“Hindy’s really enjoying his footy and you can tell by how he plays and how he’s able to move and cut through. I thought he defended really well at the fall of the ball and finished really strongly for us.”

Nick Hind
20 disposals, 12 kicks, one goal
“We tried Nick up forward for a half which worked well. He hadn’t played there for a while, so we certainly weren’t after perfection with him, but we’d expect to use his strength which is his speed and general decision-making. Nick was really good for us around stoppage, but he played his part well in terms of getting to the fall of the ball in the front half. First-up in that role was pleasing for him, so we just need to keep adding strings to his bow.”
