What is everyone's thought on getting Malceski to the club as a FA?
Our obvious weakness is our lack of foot skills coming out of defence.
He would be the perfect player for that role in our defence.
Could be the designated kicker from behinds and a good link man.
Obviously, he's had problems with his knees and will be 30 at seasons end.
But i think it's worth the risk.
Maybe get him on a 3 year deal, not sure of what sort of coin we would need to lure him from Sydney.

Too old, knees too risky. Would take games away from Scharenberg et al. Let's not be seduced by a good player playing what is probably his last good season at the level.

I understand the risk, but in recent times i feel we have avoided the risky options and taken the less risky options.
I think this would be a high risk high reward move.
Our backline is incredibly young as it is and we can't rely on another young player in Scharenberg to be the man

I fail to understand how this is face palm worthy?
A player with the skill set that Malceski possesses is just what we need.
Ever since Leon Davis retired we haven't had a reliable kicker out of defence.
These days we've got the likes of Lachlan Keeffe, who is over 200cm tall doing our kick in duties, hardly ideal.
Beats going for James Frawley, who doesn't fill a position that we necessary need, considering at full strength we already have Frost, Keeffe, Reid and Brown who can fill that need.
Oh well, just an idea.

Would rather Shaun Higgins

Wouldn't say no to him either.
But i don't think he is that pure designated kicker that i think we need.
Just about every club in the league have attacking defenders who are lethal by foot, or Hawthorn who have like 6 of them!
Us? No one.
Any other players around who could fill that role?

Malceski is a gun and a great user of the ball and why would he come to us when he can win another flag or two. This bloke can actually kick the ball out of the backline, really good footballer and I am a huge fan of his.

As for Higgins, not a chance I hope we still have wise heads at the club that know it would be wrong to get a over hyped injury prone player.

Malceski>>>>>>>Higgins

Agreed. Higgins should not be in the same sentence as Malceski.

True but I think we are going in a Mini Re-Build so would Signing a Old Player be worth it. You hope Scharanberg be ready to go Early Next Year

No, not even sure why people would ever consider it. Our recruiting of recycled players over the last couple of seasons has been downright awful. No need to add another one to that list.

I agree with you, as much as I would love him because he is still a gun regardless what people say. Both parties will lose if he picked us because we will have a player for only 2 years, in the next two years I believe we will struggle to make the 8 so we may as well play young players and Malceski has the chance to retire as one club player and possibly win a flag or two more.

I am hoping Scharenberg is ready to go in two - three weeks times. He will be a gun.

It's a no from me and for the reasons mentioned above. Whilst his skills and run are good, surely we are better off investing in Scharenburg et al and developing these guys. Our kicking out strategy and effectiveness is crying our for someone with great foot skills but I don't think Malceski is the answer

If we were Port or Freo, and really looking to have a crack at a flag in the next 2 years, then I'd make a play at Malceski. But I can't see us being in that position until 2016 at the earliest, so I don't think there is any real point. Stick with Scharenberg, Seedsman, Langdon and Williams.
Malceski's a great player though, and can grow a fine beard.

Any idea of what Matt Suckling's contract status is?
Who cares, the guy has one string to his bow and thats it. He's a great kick, but a terrible defender and that would really come to the fore in our inexperienced back line. He's great in Hawthorns side because they have blokes to help him out.

3 year deal for a 30yo get outa here.

Otherwise worth a sniff on a one year deal.

Why would Malceski/Suckling come to collingwood?

We are shit.

For extra $...

His one string is elite

You can't lure players away from clubs on a 1 year deal

I understand that most are against the idea.
All the better sides seem to take risks and get players to fill needs.
The Hawks especially, with the likes of Lake, Burgoyne, Gunston etc.
However, we seem to refuse to take risks, and any FA we pick up are not top line or elite players at their current clubs.
We need to take risks sometimes to get what we want.
Picking up FAs will only cost us in money, not draft picks, so why not have a go at it?
I'm sure we have the cap room
The other arguments is the youth/rebuild argument. Yes we should look to rebuild with youth, but why can't we pick up a couple of experienced players from elsewhere?
I wan't us to be aggressive not passive.

Pretty much spot on. The guy is a great player, but considering where our list is at, I don't think he would be a good fit.
If we were further advanced in the premiership window then fine. This is why I can't understand Melbourne going for him. I know he has a relationship with Roos, but that would not be a good fit for them considering they are still a long way from a premiership.
