Charman-Riewoldt trade 'pie in the sky'
By Laine Clark
June 21, 2007
SPECULATION about a trade between Brisbane ruckman Jamie Charman and St Kilda star forward Nick Riewoldt is "pie in the sky", Lions coach Leigh Matthews said today.
The four-time premiership coach came out swinging after a report today claimed Charman had not begun talks to extend his Brisbane contract and "club sources" believed he was open to a Melbourne move, possibly as a trade for Riewoldt.
"It is malicious and inaccurate to say that any source anywhere near this club is thinking of trading Jamie Charman," Matthews said. "There is no truth in that whatsoever.
"We initiated contract discussions with Jamie two months ago. He and his manager said they didn't want to talk about it until later in the year - that's basically all that you can do.
"From the club's point of view, we value him and hope he spends the rest of his career here - that's all you can say to your members and fans out there who can get the wrong impression."
Matthews almost laughed out loud when asked about the chances of Gold Coast product Riewoldt returning to Queensland next year.
"Would we like to have Nick Riewoldt here? We'd love him here, but that's not the point - we can't get him here," he said. "I'd love Chris Judd here too, but we can't - it's pie in the sky.
"The only reason (there is speculation) is because he is a Queenslander. I don't think we have got any capacity to be going recruiting and Nick Riewoldt is a big recruit.
"You are talking a massive amount of salary cap percentage. The chances of Nick Riewoldt being here are just about nil - not that we have had any contact (with Saints)."
Charman - a 2003 premiership winner - had been linked to Richmond earlier this year. But Matthews was having nothing of talk about unloading Charman despite having four ruckmen on his current player list.
"Jamie is clearly our best ruckman, not by a small margin," he said. "Whether you need four ruckmen on your list - which you probably do to be honest - Jamie is clearly the best of them.
"We would be a much lesser team without him."
Matthews was just glad the AFL did not have the same system adopted by the NRL.
Since ditching the anti-tampering deadline, the NRL has become a player merry-go-round in 2007 with many switching clubs mid-season.
"It's terrible, isn't it? To each their own. They even change clubs from round to round don't they?" Matthews said. "But it's normal in that game. But I'm glad it doesn't exist in our game."
