It is obvious that many on this site never saw Plugger play. Dont forget Doc wanted to play him at Centre Half Forward. Doc said he would have been the best CH the game had seen, but for his asthma. Not meaning to be derogative to Roo, as I am a huge fan of his, but how many Coleman Medals does he have? How many Brownlows? Even though Roo has played more games, has he kicked half as many goals yet? Get things into perspective.

1) Stephen Kernahan (Carlton) 226 games
2) Dick Reynolds (Essendon) 224 games
3) Ted Whitten (Footscray) 212 games
4) Nick Riewoldt (St.Kilda) 211 games*
5) Michael Voss (Brisbane) 210 games

On Sunday Roo will move into third all-time on the most games captained list;

1) Stephen Kernahan (Carlton) 226 games
2) Dick Reynolds (Essendon) 224 games
3) Nick Riewoldt (St.Kilda) 213 games*
4) Ted Whitten (Footscray) 212 games
5) Michael Voss (Brisbane) 210 games

*As of this Sunday, July 10th.

Is this legit? Sad if true.
St Kilda coach Alan Richardson has named Jarryn Geary, David Armitage and Jack Steven as potential leadership replacements for Saints legend Nick Riewoldt who is likely to hand over the captaincy at the end of this season.

The AFL’s longest-serving active skipper told the Nine Network this week he expected this season would be his last in charge of the Saints, even though it would leave him agonisingly short of a record.

"I think it is time," he said.

"I certainly hope between now and the rest of the year someone puts their hand up and takes the job next year."

Riewoldt will edge ahead of the late Ted Whitten in third place on the list of all-time games played as a captain when he leads St Kilda for the 213th time against Essendon on Sunday at Etihad Stadium.

I hope he gets the record. Even put a plan in place; name a co-captain and be prepared to hand over captaincy midway through next season. Call it 'transitioning'. Get Riewoldt that record.

Wouldn't mind a co-captain with Steven.

IMO Mav has jumped ahead of a few others now.

He might not be the best player but he's fast becoming our best leader.

Not sure that Mav would need to be chaperoned by Roo of he got the gig though.

Id like to see Co-Skippers but if Mav is the man we'd only be doing it to get Roo the record....which ain't a bad thing I suppose

Riewoldt needs to be captain next year. If Richo is waiting for someone to put their hand up in the last half of this year then they aren't deserving of the Captaincy. Either they're ready right now or they aren't ready at all.
Someone who steps up simply because it was suggested Roo won't be captain next year doesn't deserve it - in my opinion.

However - I would like to see a co-captain arrangement going on. Jack Steven is the obvious choice with his on-field attitude to the game, however I'm not sure how vocal he is. He plays like a captain, but I don't know if he converses like a captain.

I can't see Geary getting it. I'll never understand why people suggest he should be the next skipper.

Besides, what's the harm in giving Roo top spot on that list? It's something both him and the club should be incredibly proud of - and it is absolutely deserved.

Well honestly it's been coming for a few years now. As great of a skipper Nick is, if we didn't have anyone putting their hand up next year I'd be worried.

I think we should make him vice captain, and then whenever the next skipper is out with injury/suspension/rest, Roo can skipper the side. By this seasons' end, if he plays every game, he'll end the year on 220. Only needs to skipper 7 games next year to get there. I hope the club realises what an achievement this would be for not only him but for the club as a whole. I hope they get him there.

I feel like Joey was the first to come out and start this Rooey stepping down bandwagon on Game Day last week, and then Richo and even Roo himself said that it'd probably be right. Shut it. Let the man stay on and get the record, deserves the captaincy and the record without any doubt.

Honestly don't feel anyone is even close to having done enough to deserve to be the full time captain. Sure Weller and Newnes have the potential but I don't think so yet. If we took the captaincy off Rooey to give it to Armo or Geary I would be filthy.

Never understand people being filthy before a decision like that.

What if it becomes the move of all moves?

What if they are an incredible leader?

What if they bring out the best people?

Don't want anyone in RWB to fail at anything.

Absolutely no question that Roo should continue as captain next year and achieve the record. Without doubt he deserves it and it is not as if we are just nursing him along in the team to reach the milestone.

Possibly they should make his successor ( whoever that may be) the vice captain and he can start relinquishing the role to him during the season.

All I know is he's going to be a bloody impossible act to follow.

Again have to retract something stupid I've said, would definitely not be filthy if Geary got the captaincy. The man gives everything he's got for the team every week.

I really hope Nick gets to captain next year, we couldn't get him a premiership - the least we could do is get him a damn record.
