Just wondering if it would be a good idea for carlton to trade nick stevens for a high draft pick. He is still at high value and i dont believe he has been performing well at carlton. why not trade him while he is still worth something? thoughts......

I have been one of Nick's biggest critics this year. I think he has played at about 80% effort - especially if it means putting the body on the line, and even more frustrating has been his seeming loss of superb disposal skills.

However, I say keep him. He is a good player who is coasting in third gear, and will be a huge asset to our club in the next few years.

Nick has not been under any pressure for his spot in the team since he arrived. He was the best midfielder with Campo, by a mile, and no-one was pushing him from the two's to threaten his form. The same goes for many at the club, and this point has not really been acknowledged, and is a result of not having a great list (its improving).

This is one reason why seemingly crap players go to strong clubs and find form. They are under pressure to perform and maintain their spot becasue they know if they don't then they will be dropped.
Name a single position in our team that has this pressure on it. Somone in the two's pushing for their spot - seriously pushing.

Its starting to happen with Jackson and Flint pushing, but add Murphey and Gibbs into the mix and Stevo will find himself the third best (maybe even 4th best behind Simo if he continues to improve). That starts to put pressure on his spot, and I believe he will respond to that pressure and start producing the quality football we all expect. We cut him loose and we will regret it, just as we would have with Fev and Red.

When Nick Stevens is our 3rd or 4th best midfielder, thats when we will be playing finals footy again. It wont be for a few years, but i think his real value will come when the attention is off him and onto other players.

The problem is he is still our number when midfielder and will get the number one tag for at least next year. Given that, we need to keep him and not expose our kids (Simpson and Murphy particularly) to such heavy tags.

Good point. Having him out there means they opposition have to look after him. No team has three quality taggers let alone four. This will see two or three of Murphy, Gibbs, Simo,Tex, and Stevens have a pretty good time of it.

exactly,, this yr stevo cops the heaviest tag every week and for him to be in the team and take that gives guys like walker, scotland, murph etc... to perform freely

i've been very critical of Stevens this year and continually said he should be traded, but in the cold hard light of day, I think he should be kept. We have seen glimpses of what he can do and if he can just get his head and fitness right he could be a true champion.

So we play finals footy when Stevo is our 3rd or 4th best midfielder.

Expect us to play in 2 years time then, or maybe next year.

Simpson
Murphy
Walker
Gibbs

I don't think so, midfielders can only get you so far...

We won't go anywhere if we keep losing our good players. Stevens is class and easily worth more than a top 15 pick. He just needs something to play for.

carlton fans....... u dont hav gibbs yet, and u might not decide to pick him up, carlton desperately need a ruckman with the departure of french (even though he was s***) also carlton might go for a tall forward in hansen or gumbleton..... he isnt gauranteed number 1 draft pick

Because we really need tall forwards (Fev, Whitnall, Waite, Kennedy, Deluca).
Didn't know the names of any of the rucks in the draft huh?
Not to worry.:thumbsd:

I'll cop that from many people, and many clubs.............but how many did he kick against you guys in Rd12???

Well done on looking up the rucks!!
But we already have some young rucks in the pipeline. Won't waste a number 1 pick on a might make it.
Gibbs all the way. Hansen has dropped back with the form of O'Hailpin and Bower.

deluca played 1 good game..... your rucks in the pipeline, bryan played wat 4-5 games this year struggelled to make the team over barnaby french and dylan mclaren. dylan mclaren couldnt hav been a worse pick up, did absolutely nothing and never will do anything.... as the acdc song its a long way to the top...... especially for carlton

Actually mate, I'm referring to Aisake O'Hailpin, standing 200cm and runs like a rover (similar to his bro), and is learning the game faster than his brother. Another young bloke called Batson will see some action next year as well.
How's Hale going?

Now I know your being funny :D
No to the second
Wow, sounds like you were really unlucky to go from 5th to 14th with all these superstars. I guess loads of injuries to key players got you........oh wait........nope, turns out you were just crap.

LOL

back on topic - I too have been critical of Stevo, but only because he is an awesome talent who lets himself down sometimes - seems he may have been carrying an injury though for much of this year - like Fev in 2005. I would hate for him to be traded, but there are some serious whispers because of his relationship with Pagan. He did not have much of a reltaionship with that f*ckwit Williams either...so I am a little worried. I hope you stay Nick! we need you!

Does anyone think that the Blues would be looking at anyone from Port (my club) during the trade period? I'm specifically thinking of the younger Deluca brother, would he be rated by anyone at Carlton? Or anyone else from Port, such as Ryan Willits? I dont think Port would be offering either of those guys up for a trade, but i'm sure the club would listen to any offers (personal opinion, not speaking on behalf of the club).

If he has had problems with 2 coaches this would add weight to the belief that Nick has an attitude problem. If he could fix this he would be very handy but not likely to be a superstar.
