Whilst the Hawks are great kicks, I think that ability gets inflated by their elite ability to spread. They were able to get so much space against us and Essendon in the first half that the kicks didn't need to be pin point. Once Essendon tightened up their kicking wasn't so elite. It's hard to tell from TV but I imagine Suban spent most of the Hawks game chasing tail and then didn't have the fitness to spread when we had the ball.

Nice thinking.

Could have been a key factor in the Sheridan/Michie selection "battle" last year. That's more my query with Shero... I'd like to see him win a little more of his own ball. Shero was apparently a good contested ball player when we picked him up. I haven't seen a heap of that in the games I've watched him, but I'm sure it hasn't disappeared.

One thing that isn't in question is that the boy can run, and the way we play... that's a non-negotiable.

FWIW, I think Suban is most dangerous (and most valuable) when he's the one delivering a forward 50 entry - IMO, for much of last season he was our best kick by far - the guy can de-sex a fly with a Sherrin from 55 meters away. :thumbsu:
.
Gold. Going to borrow this phrase when the opportunity presents...

Suban's kicking is over-rated for mine. Sure he has great mechanics but he bangs it on the boot a lot without looking.
Doesn't have the vision of a Hill or Mundy. Or even Sutcliffe for that matter who always seems to send it somewhere good.

Simple enough... we stay in contact with him every week like the Hawks probably did with Longer and Adams, and Essendon probably did with Caddy, and Adelaide probably did with Polec, and when his contract finishes up he asks to be traded back to WA. Then we send them a solid, mature midfielder and as good a pick as we can track down.

I feel like I'm missing something, did you deliberately select examples where those players didn't end up with that team?

I was a fan of his game against Collingwood, he didn't get big stats but he was in a lot of contests, but I felt if he was a bit stronger he would've been able to influence those contest a lot more, it looked like he was just that bit of strength away from breaking a tackle or wrapping someone up. That strength should come with time though

Heh, heh... nope. Pure happenstance.

Was noting names of youngsters and clubs that I was sure were interested in them. As you highlight, nothing is certain despite all the groundwork.

Hawks had longer in the bag but dumped him when they realised they could get mcevoy. Port had more to trade for polec due to the tippett penalty.

dons tried to jump on caddy a year early but gc told them to p!ss off. And they were pushed out of the running for adams with the pies, cats and richmond all interested.

at least if hogan plays the go home card, the toast should be less motivated to pay up big for him, like us with yeo last year.

Melbourne finishing last in the year Hogan's contract is up is a major factor there though. The psd is no threat if that is the case.

I'd package him up in a deal to get Jesse Hogan to where he belongs.

LOL Do you really believe Melbourne are trading Suban and a pick/picks for Hogan? Especially after Mitch Clarks' departure? If so, I'd do business with you anytime. BTW, I've got some oceanfront property in Kalgoorlie you might be interested in.

Under pressure certainly he bangs it long - but watch his forward-50 entries from last year's games. He glances upfield before kicking, then glances at his boot while kicking... Next thing you know Pav gets a knock on his door from Australia Post, saying they've a football to deliver to this address with Matthew's name on it and can he please sign here to accept?

They've flooded the Superpit?

One of the issues is I've never felt Suban has had a clearly defined role in the team. Is he an inside midfielder? Half back flanker or even a half forward? Back pocket? Has played everywhere but never stayed in one role for an extended period of time and consequently never really stood out.

Don't think he will ever be a high enough possession winner to be a midfielder, faces serious competition on the HB line from Ibbotson/Clancee/Sutty/Duffield and isn't good enough to displace either Walters or Ballantyne as a small forward. Does have good goal sense though, is a punishing kick from beyond 50 and loves the contest, he's made a good start to the season but I still feel he should be gunning for MDB's role as a defensive forward in the near future. Don't really know where else he'd be a good fit.

Useful role player but will never be a star, having said that for pick 24 or whatever he was that's perfectly ok.

I think up until last year, he'd never done a full preseason either due to injury. He also spent the first few years missing chunks of the season with injury. The guy's not a superstar, but he's far from carp.

Subes plays two ways: Angry and bamboozled. At the moment he's more the latter, looking around sweating like a gypsy with a mortgage, as the Honey Badger would say. What he needs is for Ross to stick a poker up him, like he did last year before he went on that great run of form. Right now, he's off kilter because he didn't start the season with everyone else due to his suspension and he hasn't been made to go apeshit. If I was Ross, I'd tell him that Dyson Heppell is a fan of his mum's before the next game.

I dont think you can even compare the start of Subans career to Mundys. Mundy before he was turned into a midfielder was better than what Suban has done.

On the injury front someone like Beams who was drafted after him has been quite injury prone but is a much better player.

Yeah, when he has time to spot up a target he's good, he just lacks the decision making and/or athletic ability of those other guys to find time to steady when he's under pressure.

Of course I'm clutching at straws, but it'll be very interesting if Melbourne continue on as only Melbourne know how.

I've been a fan for many years waiting for him to reach his potential. A couple of games a year he shows he can do it but can't seem to string it together. I was looking forward to him last week to produce but he was unsighted.

Injuries haven't been kind but now is the time to cement his spot and use that sexy left foot to get us some quality inside 50s, can also win the hardball so no reason he can't make it.

Oddly we signed him to a 4yr deal I think??

On the other hand, you could count the number of players that were actually sighted last week on one hand. I don't doubt people will be bumping this thread after the budgies game or the next, right after he's names in the bests.

Well I think we should cut him. I mean he is never going be as good as Gary Ablett so why are bothering with him. Clancee? Never going to be an Ablett. He should go too. Honestly why are we wasting our team with these spuds when we could be churning through youngsters looking for players as good as Ablett. There may not be as many wins but that doesn't matter. We'll be giving everyone a chance to show how big spuds they are when they fail to be as good as Ablett.

It is interesting you bring up Clancee Pearce because Nick Suban is yet to have a season as good as Clancee Pearce's 2012. Arguably Clancee Pearce's 2013 would have been better than Suban's had he not finished the season injured.

I don't want Nick Suban to be as good as Ablett. Surely being as good as Clancee Pearce is achievable?

Yeah, but is there an "OUT: Suban" meme?

Suban: 1
Clancee: 0

It's all about consistency. Suban has 1 off games that have been outstanding and polled brownlow votes, while other where he has struggled to make an impact (some of these due to injury).

Clancee gives you 7.5/10 every week, while Suban will go 8,4,7,5,9 etc...
