It’s not that people are boring, it’s that people want a name they can identify with by representing the uniqueness of their community and its heritage. Love it or hate it, there’s not a nickname out there that can do this more effectively than the Devils.
I agree, it will be Devils.
I also disagree, cliches are very boring.

The waratah features on the arms of Hobart. It doesn't not represent Tasmanians.

But because it is so tied in with NSW it doesn't make sense for it to be the team name for Tasmania. Especially since Hobart doesn't represent the whole state. People from Launceston aren't going to get behind something from the Hobart coat of arms. They have to have something that represents tassie as a whole because the North vs. South rivalry is a real thing.

And how many Tasmanians feel connection with a Waratah? The floral emblem of Tassie is the Tasmanian Blue Gum.

Tassie Blue Gums it is.

Actually, the waratah features on the flag of the city of Launceston and Hobarts arms, so it unites.
NSW doesn't have the monopoly on the waratah.

I just don't think Tasmanians want their team to be named after the NSW floral emblem. I'm not sure how familiar you are with NSW but the waratah is everywhere. It's their state government logo as well.

I think Tassie want something that set them apart from the mainland.

I don't think they do either. I think they'll go for the most obvious and boring cliche they're fed.

Thylacines is also a cool name.

It’s not about what we’re “fed”, it’s about what Tasmanians actually want. In 2018, the team name of all state representative football teams went to a public vote that was run by the Mercury and AFL Tas. As you can see, the ‘Devils’ won the vote by a ridiculous margin. The former name of the state U18 team ‘Mariners’ was a distant second place. You and other mainlanders might consider it cliche but we won’t be losing any sleep over it.

I don't think Devils is a Cliche or boring, at least it has history and meaning behind it unlike forced monikers like Suns and Giants.

But I do agree Thylacines is a cool name!

I’d like Axemen, Loppers or Woodcutters. The latter two being more appropriate for a future WAFL team.

So?
Tigers is the name of any number of others.

But yeah, it'll be Devils, because people are boring.

The Jack Jumpers & Devils are very much associated with Tasmania. They are both quite small, both quite angry & pound for pound, they both bite like nothing else. :)

Get use to it,

Do you think calling the national cricket team 'Australia' is also clichéd? I mean how obvious and uninspiring.

And no, I'm not angry or busting a valve. I'm rolling my eyes.

I get you're excited but come on.

Also I sont get how you think devils is cliché but Thylacines are not?

The problem with Thylacines is that its not actually alliterate as the phonyms of the 'T's are different, and it's a mouthful to say. There's a reason why all AFL clubs have mascots that are 2 syllables or less. The only exception is 'Kangaroos' which gets shortened to Roos or Kangas in practice. You can't do that to Thylacines. Thighs? Lacines? Thylacs? In short its an awkward work around of the much stronger 'Tigers'.

Not exactly a convincing sample size; 142 votes out of 475.

Andrew Dillon has flagged a potential trademark conflict with Warner Bros, who hold the clothing and merchandising rights for the "Tasmanian Devil" character popularised in Looney Tunes cartoons in the 1950s.

It's ridiculous that they took the name for their character from one of our states iconic animals and now we are they ones that have to pay to use it.
What a twisted world we live in.

As I said on Facebook, bring Warner Bros on as a sponsor.

The AFL and Warner Bros have issued co-branded licenced merchandise before, so hopefully some sort of agreement can be reached.
