Nicks is a good coach because

It was the assistant coaches, it was the senior players, it was being forced to play Murphy, it was Hamish, it was our young players.

Nicks is the best coach in the history of coaches being hamstrung by everyone. Cant you tell? his game day tactics and coaching is the best ever. Thats why we finished 2 1/2 games entrenched in 15th, an amazingly high finish for a coach with the worst list of teenagers ever.

Because he has brilliant man-management skills. Apparently a trait way more important than football strategy, game day coaching nous, etc, according to Mark Ricciuto and Paul Chapman.

"Matthew Nicks landed the Adelaide senior coaching gig, ahead of four experienced assistants, on the basis of his capacity to build and manage relationships.

The Crows had been open in their desire for a "man manager" to replace Don Pyke. Adelaide president Rob Chapman called people-management skills "the No. 1 criteria" that the club had sought." (Jake Niall 2019)

Or maybe he is a good coach because that is the best the Crows can attract. The four assistants he beat - Scott Burns, Adem Yze, Robert Harvey and Garry Hocking. Adam Kingsley chose to drop out. Hardly a great list of candidates.

Kingsley would have been better

I'm not convinced he's that great either. Sure, he's got the Giants into finals but, given the talent they have at their disposal all over the ground, they should be doing a lot better than they are.

He seems a bit one-dimensional in that if the orange tsunami is thwarted, there's no back-up plan. Let's see if he can turn it around.

To be fair - that is what was needed back in late 2019 and IMO Nicks did it brilliantly. He was what the club needed.

The issue is he can't coach actual football, which is why he should have been fired in 2022.

At the time, that's exactly what we needed. We had a fractured playing group still suffering from Walsh's murder, a failed Grand Final and that bloody camp. So Nicks rebuilt the foundation brick by brick. And he turned us into a club where the kids wanted to stay... and others wanted to come to and the players began to play for each other again. Fantastic job. BUT... that's where his journey needs to end. He hasn't got the match day nous or ability to strategise or change things up.
