Just seen this too, fair old shock.

As for the replacement, it all depends on contracts and possibly who can get out of theirs.

Alonso in a Merc would be interesting, would be a fair bet to show up Hamilton too.

Something I noted looking up Rosberg's career now that he's finished. His F1 career is not quite, but as good as, a linear path straight to the top to the F1 title. Every year is an improvement in some way. There's no backwards dip. Compared to other drivers, whose careers have fluctuations relative to their form, their car. Nico is up. When you consider the kind of industry F1 is. It's actually an extraordinary career without anyone noticing.

From his feet year in 2006. It goes

17th, 9th, 13th, 7th, 7th, 7th, 9th, 6th, 2nd, 2nd, 1st.

In 2008, yes he dropped 4 places to 13. But that year is marked by scoring his first podium finishes.

In 2012, he drops two spots from his previous best to 9th. But that year he picked up his first win and pole.

Even with the two 2nd places. In 15, he won 6 races to 5 in 14.

It's only in the series of 7th place finishes he didn't improve within that. But still, there's no dip in outright results.

Even in his first year, his worst, some of you might remember he set fastest lap on debut in Bahrain.

That's impressively solid and reliable in a volatile industry like F1 imo. What other driver in any series has had a career like that?

It's pretty much reflective of his personality on the track, isn't it?
