Nicole Hildebrand is a Melbourne University player from Ballarat. A medium-sized defender with a great ability to take intercept marks and distribute the ball with her left foot. Hildebrand placed in the top 4 at Melbourne University’s Best & Fairest behind players who are already on AFL lists. Also played in the last two exhibition games for Melbourne, playing at half back and is in the top 46 players in Australia.

Not the first - we had already lost a few (Brennan, O'Connor, I think there's another one I've forgotten). Hopefully it doesn't become a thing, but its a better problem to have than the men's problem of having young kids fleeing home to mum after a couple of years.

From what I've seen over the years, girls are less likely to return home to Mum and their local friends than boys (not restricted just to sportspeople). Honestly, I think girls are more resilient.

Survivorship bias. Girls who aren't resilient probably don't get to that level in footy, given the peer/societal pressures they have to get past.

Zillmere's coach from last year went to Aspley I believe, and a number of Zillmere players followed.

I think she also played juniors for Aspley, so was probably told at some point she wasn't allowed to play there any more, so there is probably an element of always having wanted to play seniors for them, and wanting to give it a shot (and do the club a bit of a favour) while she still has the chance.

The Brisbane Lions have secured Kate McCarthy, Sam Virgo and Nicole Hildebrand for AFLW 2018.

Hildebrand was recruited from Melbourne University.

She is one of the Lions’ most experienced players and a key cog in coach Craig Starcevich’s backline.

“Nicole is really important to our backline,” said Brock.

“We’re really excited that she has re-signed with the Club.”
