Nigel Lappin set to stay at Geelong GEELONG will retain the services of highly regarded assistant coach Nigel Lappin in 2022. LACHIE YOUNGChief football writer less than 2 min read September 24, 2021 - 1:51PM Geelong Advertiser GEELONG will retain the services of highly regarded assistant coach Nigel Lappin in 2022. Lappin had been linked to a move to Carlton to join up with former Brisbane Lions premiership teammate Michael Voss, who on Thursday signed on as senior coach at the Blues for three years. Lappin’s departure would have made it four assistant coaches at the Cats to leave in just a few weeks, following the exits of Matthew Knights
, Corey Enright and Matthew Scarlett
. But his commitment to Geelong is welcome news at GMHBA Stadium, with football manager Simon Lloyd saying Lappin was one of the best exponents of his craft across the AFL. “Nigel Lappin will be at the club next year,” Lloyd said. “We have had a commitment from Nigel that he will be at the club moving forward. “Nige is highly qualified and one of the leading assistants in the game.” Geelong has had a number of assistant coaches from across the AFL raise their interest in coming to the club next year to work with Chris Scott
, who is out of contract at the end of 2022. The off-season shake-up in the coach’s box will provide Cats players with plenty of fresh voices given the off-field stability they have had in recent years, and Lloyd said despite the departures of Knights, Enright and Scarlett, there would be some experience alongside Scott next year. “We have a number of strong candidates across the competition who have expressed their interest,” he said. “We are looking structurally at what we have and the talent we have in coaching internally, but we are also looking at a multitude of coaches externally and talking to a lot of different people. “We are just logically working through the process and that will take care of itself over the coming weeks. So whilst we have lost some experience we will have some high quality coaches coming into our football program for 2022 and beyond.”⁸
