I would like to see a night grand final only if it is the result of a losing captain's "double or nothing" challenge to the result of the day GF. It could start 30 minutes after the day grand final.

I am sure the players would be cool with it. Club songs are full of commitments to "never give up" or "never surrender" etc

Possible problem with night grand final is most people would be drunk before the game even started. Ok, so maybe that's the case even with a daytime grand final but it is an extra 6-7 hours of drinking beforehand.

Drinking isn't compulsory the whole of the day.

Almost every big sporting event in the World is at night. Even the FA cup is moving later and later. The WAFL grand final will be a Saturday night.

Day events are the realm of the suburban comps.

It's a s**t time for a big sports event especially in WA being just past midday and a lot of people work on Saturday, later is a far more convenient time for a lot of people.

We play almost all the other big games in the AFL at night and it doesn't seem to worry people, why not the biggest one of all?

lol people say it is only about the players but they wouldn't get paid hundreds of thousands of dollars a year to play a game without so many of us. Heck I'd bet if the AFL offered them all a 2% pay rise to simply move the game to night I reckon they couldn't sign fast enough.

The AFL compromises EVERYTHING for money.

The least the can do is put the sport's biggest day on when it's best for the game

Why is playing it at 2.30pm best for the game? How is making it later at a more accessible time for far more people in Australia bad for the game? Ironically I think the only reason the AFL haven't moved it yet is for money, they are keeping it up their sleeve a big bargaining chip for a new TV rights deal in a few years time.

Sunshine, more chance of dry ball, best football more likely.

The game.

How would you know this?

Every other night game during the season is just that. A night game between two clubs. Essendon V Richmond for example is always a night game because it's "Dreamtime at the G" but I can't recall the last one I watched. It doesn't appeal to me because I'm not into watching either club. But I watch EVERY grand final.

It's the pinnacle of the AFL season and it should remain as accessible to watch for as many people.

If you want to watch it a couple of hours later ...move to the East!;)

Night time for sure.

I find it astonishing that there's so much resistance on the basis of 'tradition', as if any other aspect of the AFL reflects tradition any more.

So why have it at 2.00pm on a Saturday? This was good in the 1970's when shops shut at 12.00 on Saturday but more and more people work on Saturdays than ever before.

Spose we could have it Sunday at 2pm if you like?

If you have it late it impacts on families with young kids. You're never going to please everyone are you? And if you work on a Saturday and really want to watch it...you could take the Day off. Or finish early.

Well it's obviously both as far less people work or play sport on a Saturday night than during the afternoon.

You might be right in that it's a trump card up the sleeve of McLaughlin at the moment. I just enjoy the day games more. I can't see them changing in what could be a detrimental move in Melbourne. There a lot more traditionalists over there I'm sure. I do know the NRL grand final is often quoted a recipe for success but to be honest having been brought up watching SFA and FA Cup finals at 3pm on a Saturday I just feel it's the right time. I like the game being in daytime

To include everyone who plays sport or works on a Saturday in WA you'ld have to look at a 3.30 or 4pm bounce would you think? They've got a 2.30 bounce over there as it is. So it suits the Vics. Not sure we enter into the equation.

People are already sinking piss at breakfast on grand final day. By the time a night grand final starts they'll either be asleep, aggressive, hassling people for roots, at the casino or in hospital.

So we should schedule sporting events to cater for the small number of idiots that think getting smashed is the best way to spend Grand Final Day?

Does having it later may means you are more likely to have a normal day and start "partying" when you arrive at the evening function?

Not sure there is a groundswell of public support for a night grand final.

An Age newspaper poll (last December) produced the following result:

Day: 83%

Twilight: 8%

Night: 8%.

Channel 7 would love a night grand final and the TV rights deal is worth $2.5 billion. Then again, they knew it would be day grand finals when they made their bid.

Next time round they can offer an extra $ billion (only if the games are played at night).

Any move to night grand finals will require a complete re-think of GF entertainment. Tom Jones and Sting performing in their dressing gowns and slippers would be ratings killers.
