If nine have the rights to night cricket it will be bad news for fans, instead of missing half the last session we will miss half the days(or night in this case) play.

Anti-siphoning laws means they have to show it live (except for news I believe). Anyway I hope they lose cricket rights soon- still annoyed about the World Cup.

I think I would be open to considering a switch to make the final session start at 6:30 (i.e. shift all the sessions forwards so first session is the second session). Still not entirely convinced though.

The laws don't mean much when they are never enforced, no government is going to brave enough take the cricket off channel 9 for not showing the games in full.

in Brisbane we routinely miss 60-90 minutes of cricket in the summer, they show a game show at 5:30 then the news then a current affair.

i have nothing against innovation in the game... but the fundamental problem with night test cricket is the experience for the crowd. one of the key redeeming factors for the relatively slow play of a test is the pleasure of sitting outside on a sunny day to watch an afternoons play pleasantly unfold; the last thing i'd want to do on a thursday or friday or saturday or sunday night is sit and watch something so passive. i'd either get cold or tired or rather be at the pub. you just dont go out at night to watch something slow.... name one form of relaxing outdoor entertainment that works well at evening.

Since when did it get cold at night time in the summer?

I'm not sure what the exact proposal of 'night' test matches entails, but if it's simply moving all the sessions forward by one (1st session starts at 1pm, 2nd at 4, 3rd at 6:30) there won't be much play in the dark anyway.

I wouold presume that Nine would want the whole of prime-time, so stumps would be at around 10pm. Working backwards, third session 8-10, second session 5:30-7:30 (and I be they would still have News, ACA, and a Two And A Half Men repeat in that session), first session 3:00-5:00; having two half hour breaks rather than a 40 minute and a 20 minutes one.
I really wouldn't be all that surprised if, laws permitting, Nine moves Test cricket to Go! anyway. It doesn't rate like it used to, and they need content to push their secondary channels.

As you say, moving by one session - to a 7:30 stumps time - wouldn't be that big an issue now in terms of light. Particularly in Melbourne, Adelaide and Hobart.

ha ha... well it depends where you live I guess. In the UK it can get pretty cold on summer evenings.

Considering most tests go the half hour extra, you'd be looking at finishing at 10.30, rather than 10 in that system. Probably a bit late for a 7 hour event.
50 over cricket often finishes a bit after 10, so its not a big difference in that respect. Nine might be happy to accept a 9:30 scheduled stumps, with a 10pm end of telecast in te epectation of play going the extra half hour.

Personally, I still think there are more issues than just the ball to be considered before night Tests should be allowed - and in many places they should never occur. There's not much that can be done in paces with heavy dew, and other conditions that affect certain places around the world.
But the reality is administrators want it regardless of what it does to the balance of the game.

What's wrong with bringing some variables back into cricket?

*Subject to pink ball trials

I'm pretty sure there was an article like this a couple of years ago regarding trials with the orange ball.

The whole ball thing is a massive hurdle to overcome, so I wouldn't be confident of it just yet.
