I grew up in Noble Park. Was ******* glad to move away from it.

While I respect your honesty, I question the fact that you have found yourself so often in situations where this sort of behaviour becomes the norm.

Just walk away and encourage your friends to do the same, unless your friends enjoy it. Then choose human friends instead.

Andronuicus, pantskyle's post might explain it a bit. Some areas just get violent

Thats just a cop out.

I've lived in areas that would be considered very violent, but found fighting wasn't ever needed. Certainly not something that was unavoidable. While I understand defending yourself or others might have to happen in an extreme circumstance, for it to be anything like regular suggests there is a problem somewhere else.

Totally. I'd even add so called dangerous cities like Davao, Manila, Bangkok and Hanoi to the list.

Violence is a means to an end in developing countries i.e. a robber might threaten or use violence to steal something off someone. But rage killings and out of control machismo aren't prevalent in Asia. I think its because Asians tend to value spiritual health as much as wealth, whereas our cunsumer driven society produces a sense of not belonging to any real society or having anything in common with the people who should be our brothers - so we act out to separate ourselves from the herd.

Yeah, I think that has something to do with it - there still seems to be a connection with the community in some countries, or at least a sense of community or obligation. That's not so prevalent in Oz.

We've heard comparisons with the UK, Europe, Asia, what's the comparison with the USA? Considering their penchant for gun violence and paranoia, what's the clubbing atmosphere and street feel like?

No comparison, I've spent a fair amount of time in North America and never seen a fight or violence. I'm sure there is the occasional punch thrown but its certainly not a nightly occurrence like in Australia.

The two things North America have in their favor is

1. Drinks at pubs are cheap, the need to pre drink is almost non existent, people can afford to buy all their alcohol at the bar and this actually reduces how drunk people get by the end of the night.

2. The ratio of guys to girls is even or at times more girls than guys, guys are far less likely to get violent when there is the opportunity to pull.

I'm not claiming that fighting was ever needed though. I'm claiming I used to do it because I thought it made me cool, and more of a man.

So what you're saying is the opportunity presented itself more often in the areas you found yourself and you "took advantage" of it, for lack of a better phrase?

It was definitely part of the culture of the area at the time. It was considered cool to fight. Some people (like me) were certainly more impressionable to it than others. The ironic thing is I'm a shit fighter.

I don't mind being honest about it. I was a turd and I'm ashamed of that part of my past. But I changed my behaviour, grew up etc. and luckily I've been able to hold a job my entire adult life. Two blokes I know who thought fighting was cool have been in and out of prison since they were about 17. Their life never even got started, all because they put such a huge value on being staunch. And still do from my understanding, or they wouldn't keep ending up in prison.
