Nine Rule Changes for 2019

Would have been interesting to have had the netball zone for ball-ups for point kick-ins as well, in the preseason games.

The only rule change I like is the one where runners and water carriers are only allowed on the field after goals and before the bounce.

The rest, meh
  • Defenders that take a mark or win a free kick within nine metres of their own goal will be given space to dispose of the ball with the player on the mark brought back in line with the top of the goal square. Are grounds going to be marked with a 9m arc or will it be left up to the umpire's judgment?

Goal squares are 9m long, so I'd assume that they'd refer to the top of the goal square for measurement - basically any mark taken by a defender between the goal line & top of the goal square will see the man on the mark stand in line with the to of the goal square

Am I the only person who thinks this won't solve congestion and low scoring? 6-6-6 is all well and good at centre bounces but you'll still see rolling mauls at stoppages around the ground. Until a free-flowing side takes the comp by storm and wins the flag it's hard to see defensive footy disappearing.

Not happy with the htb crackdown either, think it's too heavily policed now and would like to have seen a shift back in the other direction.

I agree in that there won't be much of a change in the mauls, I'm in the camp that it more free kicks for htb and bad disposals would spread out the field more. We'll see what happens as coaches adapt.
It's not really a rule change, but I hope they can make adjustments to how they whistle the game. The confusion around advantage calls is pretty embarrassing. A sport with such a long history should not have such amateur moments.

Don't really care about the rules , however i'm wondering how this will effect our game style etc ?

No . 7th man can’t go in between square and 50. 6 must be inside the 50 with one of those 6 in the square.
I'm talking about the 6 "midfielders". Aside from the four allowed at the centre bounce, do the other two have to be on the wing?

How they going to police it?

Surely we won't see play being suspended while an ump consults the video??!

There's 3 field umpires...the set up at centre bounces will be easy to police...

Same way they do at the moment - the 2 field umpires not at the centre bounce stand opposite corners of the centre square, while 2 of the boundary umpires stand at the other two corners, and they'll officiate if a player lines up along the wing in the wrong spot just as they have done previous seasons when a player enters the centre square prior to the ball being bounced.

I worry the video ump is going to become involved unnecessarily

They'll probably be busy watching to make sure the last drinks person has crossed the line and isn't 2 steps inside the boundary when the ball is bounded...:D

So on a kick in the player doesn’t have to kick it to himself to play on, does that mean he can just run straight out of the square? If so then what’s the point of the square? As it use to be a place to kick in from and you couldn’t step over the line, if you did it was a ball up.

That's my question as well. Under that rule the square will serve just two purposes

- an area where if a mark is taken the player is lined up directly in front for the shot
- are area where one player for each team waits until a restart in the centre (new rule) after a goal or at the start of a quarter

Certainly defenders should take the ball downfield with less pressure if the square has no bearing on a kick in. That will create new setups around the wings rather than in the back pockets

The hands in the back rule is good,a free kick against players throwing themselves forward with the slightest contact would have enhanced it even further.
This is the end of Rance making the AA team

It will mean the speedy back pockets and half back flankers should rack up stats. Zac touhy will be getting 30 + every week.

There are lots of extremely stupid rules in the AFL but hands in the back was right up there, particularly as many players (and some umpires) seemed to think that it meant you were now allowed to push a guy square in the back as long as you used your forearm.
